Having Trouble Oc'ing my 8800GT

Thread Starter
SO heres the deal- I have an 8800gt SC that I want to OC. The highest that I have ever been able to get it is 721/975 . However, when I set it t0 650/1000, It fails and requires a restart. What gives?

I think I may know why. The memory on the EVGA 8800GT can barely handle 1000mhz, but only a few people have luck getting that far. My advice is to keep it at 721/975, or if you do want to lower it, experiment with getting as close to 1000 as possible, and when it crashes, lower bit by bit to find something stable. You could also use some better cooling for the 8800GT. Try the EVGA AKIMBO kit, the Accelero S1 w/Turbo Module, or if you have money, the Thermalright HR-03GT with a good fan. Good luck?

I dont think all EVGA's have the same Chips Cyborg

Mine ran 3DMARK06 @730 / 1755 / 2100 - and thats on stock volts, stock cooler, stock EVGA 8800GT

I can vouch that the AKIMBO is a damn fine nice cooler. I recommend it to anyone with a 8800GT, simply because it expells heat out of the case. Here is my complete review:

I have the same EVGA cards I have mine at 716/1784/976 but ive been able to get 730/1819/1022. Every card is different to a certain extent.the reasons for crashes are unstable overclocks or clocking too high. Your memory might not be able to go that high.IT is not recommended to clock your memory to over 1000 for 24/7 use.

EVGA has a tuning tool:http://www.evga.com/articles/405.asp

I got 1k memory on my 8800GT pretty much w/o trying. I got quite a few artifacts when I tried taking it to 1.1k though. Go water
post #7 of 18
It all depends on the memory ics that were used on your build of 8800gt. The qimonda I believe is what there called average 1000, the samsungs can clock higher, but the crappy hynix I got landed with wont budge much over 975.

I have my mem at 1050. I do get artifacts in Crysis, but not in Bioshock, and I haven't really tested any other games, but I could drop my mem clock down since warmech stated the obvious, but I have had it clock at 730/1850/1050 (core/shader/mem) for two days now with no effect on temps.

each card is diff....

I just burned up a 8800gt that would run 650/1625/1000 it was hindered by core....

replaced it and new one, same manufacturer OC to 700/1700/975 and I just stpped, prolly will keep going, Im just a bit wearing being I pulled a heatsink of my card..

here it is.. Needless to say its not working too well... And this was from setting pcie freq too high in bios, not overclocking so dont get nervous, it wasnt even OC'd when this happened

For the lazy, here's a link to that cooler: http://www.evga.com/products/moreInf...202-F2-EV03-A1

I've been thinking about it, but spending an extra $80 for my two 8800GT's would be painful. At that price I woud have been better off going with two GTS's or something else. My GT's are ovens at this point though.....can't believe they didn't come with a cooler that pumps the heat out of the case.

I'm stuck with one of the "lesser" cards too. Best I can do is 682/1705/1000. Thought I was doing the right thing getting the "Alpha Dog OC" version of the card.....seems I should have gotten a non-OC'd, stock card based on all the results I've been seeing from folks that did all the OC'ing themselves on the stock versions.
