Is it worth getting another 8800GT for SLi?

Thread Starter
Well the title says it all. My Rig Sig still shows that I have the 8600GT x2 SLi, but I infact did upgrade with the 8800GT (G92) and let me say that I went from 9000 to the 10000 range at stock with two 8600GTs and in the 11000 with medium overclocking (Stock being the whole computer: CPU/Mem/GPU). in 3DMark06 that is.

Now with the new 8800GT I get close to 13000. 342 points shy from that to be exact. So before I got 11339 with 2 8600GTs and now I get 12658 with one 8800GT which equals a defferance of 1319. I don't really know if this is considered good, but my game(s) play really well. Infact I haven't played any games lately because I'm more intreasted in getting higher scores in 3DMark. Except Bioshock which I played earlier for the first time in a long time just to get a real taste. I even have Crysis but like I said I'm a score whore and need to get out of the loop so my question really now is, is it worth getting another card to go SLi with, and does it make a big differance in scoring?

Personally I think after making so many ajustments to core/shader/mem clocks and overclocking my rig with 2 8600GT, and now the 8800GT it doesn't really matter what the score is because to be honest I Think Bioshock looked really good. But I need to play Crysis to really see I think.

Sorry this post is so long but if anybody gets what I'm trying to say please let me know what you think.

And for the record I've over clock the 8800GT from (core/shader/mem) 600/1500/900 to 730/1850/1050 with no ill effects. Fan at 100% soon to be liquid cooled if the chance comes up.

730/1850/1050 is very good for 8800GT. In most cases, OC beyond that make gain few hundreds points in the benchmark but you may not tell the difference in game. You have 700W PSU, get another GT won't be an issue especially its price is so low now.

Why not go for anthor one if your enjoy it.Its cheap and it will last for a while.

take that crosshair to the max. ATi is releasing the 4xxx series whilst Nvidia is gonna rebrand the 8800GT to 9800GT. I wonder what will happen to it in the future.

I enjoy it alright. I mainly like the fact that I got a little higher on the scores in 3Dmark06 but thinking about it I don't think the scores really matter much after doing all this overclocking and what not, but I'm having a hard time wondering if another 8800 is worth the effort. I feal this way because I thought I got a good deal on the two 8600GTs and then I find out there a piece of junk, then I just recently read that nVidia goes through a 6 month product cycle. Makes since (I'm stupid for not seeing that) but that leads me to beleive that the 8600, and the 9000 series suck for a reason.

simple scenario for ya...

My sig with 1 8800gt - 13181 3dmark06

Same rig with a second - 17276 3dmark06

thats 4000 points, all via graphics, insane FPS COD4 I average 100+ at 1680x1050 all settings on high... crysis smooth as butter 30-35 FPS 1680x1050 all settings H...

Be sure you have a board that supports full PCI-E x16 X x16..

Well worth it... I just plain love it.......

As for waiting for some ati future series...... I wouldnt recommend it, there will always be something better on the horizon..

I see you have a quad, and I compared your scores with mine on ORB. I think I'm going to get another card and see where that takes me. Right now I can run Crysis on ultra high with 25+ FPS, but I do get some artifacts overclocking my card at 730/1850/1050 ( core/shader/mem ) Bioshock doesn't show any artifacts with all settings enabled, and I haven't tested COD4, but will be once I get off of work.

I just made the move to SLI 8800GT's this past weekend and it's been great so far. I upgraded from a G80 GTS 320 KO (which was a great card and crazy OC'er) and just one of the GT's outperformed it, 2x blew it away. I don't have a very high OC on my C2D but basically went from 12,133 to 13,848, and that's with a lower clock on the CPU and I haven't reached the OC potential on the GT's (702/1728/1000 so far). With a good airflow case, the temps haven't been an issue either, idle 41, 44 and load 55, 59.

Like acjed mentioned the performance in games like COD4 is awesome. With everything maxed at 1680x1050, 4xAA, AF slider maxed and it stays at 125 mostly, dips to ~90 during heavy firefights with airstrikes, ~60 smoke grenades.

I see you mentioned crysis, I played around with it last night. I don't think it's very optimized for SLI, I was playing it on everything medium with my GTS, but with the SLI GT's on all high I didn't find it too smooth and put them back to all medium and had great smooth play. I don't think this has as much to do with the cards as it does the game itself. I also wasn't using the drivers that supposedly helped, 169.44 I am using 169.21 whql.

Hey Blade, i also have 2 8800 GT's
My score turned out to be very similar to 10acjed.

I started with 1 8800GTS Score: 8000-9000

Switched to 1 8800GT Score: 12400

Decided to go SLi 2x 8800 GT Score: 17900 with CPU @ 3.4
I OC'ed my cpu to 3.8 and hit 18000+ , but that was just for bragging rights and i dont use it like that 24/7, until i get my TRUE in the mail.

But to give you a warning, my Single 8800GT i overclocked to 730/1800/1100
when i got my second card in, those settings would not work in SLI.
I had to downclock, because in my honest opinion i dont think that second card i got could get that high. No Two cards are the same.
So now im stuck with 690/1700/980
or something to that effect, to be able to play 4-7 hours No artifacts.

I use x2 DuORB's on my Cards which keep my temps @ 37 Idle and 48 Load.
My Single 8800GTS was 65 Load, so i know these coolers are the ****.

Good luck with your system bro, and if i were you... Get the second Card
Its amazing seeing the performance of 2 8800GT's SLied
