Weird BSODs with OC

post #1 of 9

hey, question here;

I bought a cheap 2.4 ghz C2D e4600 so i could overclock it (this is my first build btw). I know a fair bit about overclocking and a good deal on RAM but im having problems that seem to be RAM related. Currently my system specs are: 225 FSB speed with a 12x multiplier. The voltage is stock at 1.215v. As for temps ive nvr seen them above 30C for more that 5 seconds even during gaming sessions. My RAM is 2 X 2gb A-Data PC6400 800. I upped its stock voltage to 1.9v from 1.8 due to stability issues. for a divider i use 3:5 meaning my DRAM frequency is 375 (under stock speed). I loosened the timings to 6-6-6-15 to help with stability. My goal is to hit 3.0ghz but if i raise my FSB to 230 i blue screen. Any idea what i am doing wrong? i dont need a voltage boost in my CPU i dont think. Ask if you need more info

I'll give you hint: It's the overclock

I'm guessing you need more vCore

hey thx AMD+nVidia. I upped the vCore to 1.225 and the FSB to 230. It makes sense now that the vcore was the only thing that was left to change, I also changed the RAM divider to 2:3 so the RAM is only clocking at 345. super pi ran ok and it hasnt crashed it the last 10 minutes so i will run prime95 to test the new core voltage stability.

up your ram voltage to 2.0 it mite help,i always run mine at that with no issues never any higher without a fan cooling it down some if you go over 2.1 or 2.2,imo

well prime95 went ok overnight. Im gonna increase the FSB and stuff but I was wondering about RAM dividers. My BIOS says that my DRAM frequency cant go below 667mhz but i read overclocking guides that say you should bring the RAM down to a 1:1 ratio for overclocking. Does it even matter as long as it is below stock speed? (current speed is 690 at 3:2 divide)

I have the same processor as you, and what i'd say is, drop the multiplier to 9 and raise the fab to something like 320-330. Upp the vcore to 2.6-.7 and upp the ram voltage a tad/ also the northbridge speed. I dont run it overclocked anymore but i could

I had it stable at 3 ghz with something like 1.45 V (pretty risky) at 9 X 358

***Update***

upped FSB to 235 and instant BSOD (obviously)
upped vCore to 1.335 and BSOD after windows loaded
upped RAM voltages to 2.0 BSOD after desktop came up
upped vcore to 1.35 and has been running smooth for about 15 minutes, passed superpi. I will probably stop here for awhile before overclocking any further, i want to test stuff like RAM timings and RAM frequency, thanks alot everyone who gave suggestions.
