Anyone running GA-EP35-DS3R and e8400 Wolfdale? OC Q...

Hey guys, I'm a long time PC builder (as in I built 286's with SIPPs for my first PC when I was 12 ) But I'm just getting into the OC party.

I have the above mentioned board with 4Gb Patriot 1066 RAM at stock 5-5-5-12 timings. I am running the massive Zalman 9700 cooler.

I am wondering whether core temperature is affected by running a lower multiplier and higher FSB vs. sticking with 9x and a lower FSB at the same clock frequency.

Also, if you're using this or a similar board and the same 3.0Ghz proc, what settings are you using for multiplier, FSB and memory clock? I've ran at 3.6 and 4.05 stable at 9x but the temps on PRIME got way to high for my liking (as in a peak of 72c which scared me...)

Also, the proc idles at around 39c at standard 3Ghz speed. This seems warm to me considering the size of the sink I'm running. Any comments there are appreciated too.

Thanks!!!!

Core temp is affected by the voltage you put into the processor. This is usually called vcore. The more the vcore, the higher the operating temp and usually, the higher the stability. The general knowledge is that if you want to break a certain OC barrier, you will need to slightly increase voltage to get stability to move forward with overclocking efforts. What is your voltage? That 39c idle seems pretty high for a dual core at 3GHz! Check the voltages. I am sure there are others out here that can help me more than you, but this is my 2 cents.

Use Real Temp to monitor your temps, it's more accurate with the new 45nm chips.

I have the EP35-DS4, which is exactly like your board but with silent pipe and I have mine stable at 445x9 with a vcore of 1.275.

I have 2gb of DDR2-800 but I'm running them at 890 (1:1 ratio) with timings of 4-4-4-12 and 2T Command Rate.

Thanks guys for the responses and the example. I'm running 9x400 right now and staying around 38c. I changed the orientation of my Zalman 9700 so the exhaust of the heatsink fan is inline with the exhaust fan on my case, hopefully creating a more linear airflow in the case and drawing more air in from the front. It dropped the temps by a few degrees.

I am letting the Gigabyte board handle the voltage with automatic settings but might try manual if it will let me lower the voltage and still be stable.

Thanks again!

there is a thread for your board under the intel motherboards section, you should read it. Auto settings on voltage aren't a good idea. Those temps are too high, your mobo probably set the vcore way too high for that OC.
