Weird problem/noises

I have this problem with my second hard drive where occasionally it starts making an odd buzzing/squeaking sound. The weird part is it silences itself as soon as i throw any file onto it, no matter how small.

It seems like it's in use starting from when it randomly starts humming until I actually use it for something. I have tried turning off indexing service on it (although I had already turned it off for the whole computer). I really have no clue what it could be.

Anyways, it's not intolerable by any means. A little annoying, but nothing too bad. I just decided I would check to see if anyone has heard of a similar problem or has any ideas

It's a Western Digital 250gb 2500JB, according to SpeedFan, by the way.

How old is this hard drive? I'd consider backing up anything on the drive, as this is usually signs of failure to come from the arm on the hard drive failing. I could be wrong, but in my hard drive experiences, the few I've lost started like that.

I actually didn't have anything on it anyways at the time. I mainly just put it in incase I needed or wanted a bit of extra space. It doesn't really matter if it dies to me, I'll just be careful not to store anything I really want to keep on there.

I only bought it about a year and a half ago, but I bought it from a more than questionable store so I won't assume it was really new or anything.

Thanks for the advice, though! It does seem like it could be early signs of failure, pretty likely actually.

Now if only I could code a program that would create like a 1kb on the drive file every 30 min or something >.> Heh, kidding. Definitely not worth the effort, or small the small resources involved in running it.

Well, you could do something like...well, if you used something like firefox portable, you could install it on that hard drive, so your cache would create disk activity constantly from your browsing
