Recovery cd problem

post #1 of 6
Thread Starter
OK, I am trying to re install windows on a friends laptop. It's a toshiba M45 satillite, going on 3 or so years she says. Well it should be easy, just put dvd, follow commands and fresh install. Well that is not the case. It seems that toshiba made a run of computers with a stupid problem.

The dvd uses norton ghost to redo the image on the hard drive. Well, it seems that the version I have needs to write down the errors to a floppy drive. Of course there is no floppy on machine. When the process reaches 100% I get a a:\\GHOST:ERR.

I googled it and found alot of info on the problem. Seems that it isn't uncommon. Well, I've tried everything that I read on the subject and nothing has worked. I've run out of options and i need help. The laptop is no good because the first thing the dvd does in wipe windows. She needs her laptop working.

I've tried calling toshiba, but they want 35 bucks just to connect and i've read that hasn't solved peoples problems.

I need help from those smarter then I.

May I ask the purpose of the reinstall? Was it working perfectly fine and you just decided to do a format, or were you having problems?

Dude, how does your question help fix his problem? He currently has a formatted HD that doesn't have an OS.

=====================

I wonder if there is a USB to Floppy adapter like there are IDE & SATA to USB adapters, then you could hook a standard floppy drive to a USB port on her laptop.

I have searched, but have been unsuccessful in finding one though

.
I guess you could buy an External USB Floppy Drive???

...because Ghost wants to report errors, suggesting there's a problem somewhere? If there wasn't a problem, the image would be on the hard drive and it wouldn't be reporting errors.

Maybe Ghost just needs to write to a floppy that there were no errors and since there is no floppy drive to write to Ghost gives an error.

The reason for the reinstall, I guess doesn't matter, because now the HDD is blank because "the first thing the dvd does in wipe windows." That is why I asked how your question helps him fix the problem.

I still think he needs to somehow hook up an external floppy drive to see if that fixes the problem.

Do you have a friend that has a copy of XP? I am not advocating the use of the other person's key. Use her key.
