Q6600 vs. Q6700

Thread Starter
I am deciding between the Q6600 and Q6700. My main goal for this quad is to get to 4ghz on air. Since the Q6700 has a 10x multiplier, should I shell out the extra $50 for it over the Q6600? If I decide to go with a Q6600 then will it get me to 4ghz?

Note: the q6600 in my sig rig is hypothetical.

you will not get to 4ghz with either chip (I've owned both) on air.

With that said, the Q6700 is still the better option. the higher multi will let you get 3.8 with the right cooling. The Q6600's top out at around 3.6 on air (unless you get a golden stepping, even then 3.8 usually needs crazy vcore in the 1.55 range which will ultimately fry the chip)

Thats the route I went. I picked up a Q6700 and can get to 3.9GHz with less then 1.5v vcore. I am still testing, but I do have a decent chip thanks to Xecuter. My Q6700 has a VID of 1.225v.

But I also am building a system for my brother with a Q6700 as well. His tops out at 3.7GHz with 1.47v vcore, so it is all luck of the draw. His Q6700 has a VID of 1.25v.

some q6600s will get to 4.0GHz.

Statistically the Q6700 should get higher than the 6600, but it's not in your control....

Thats a heck of a VID eric. (And pretty rare for the Q6700)

4.0GHz on air in Texas with the summer approaching? Are you responsible for the AC bill? That goal is a little overboard. 3.6-3.8 on air maybe. Q6700 "might" give you a better shot but a great Q6600 could perform just as well.

The Q6700 is pretty much the best bang for the buck quad available right now.

Hey what did you read the VID with? In Core Temp my Q6700 shows VID 2.2250v Also what MB you got with the Q6700? I got the EVGA 780i.

If the Q6700 drops in price before I go to buy a cpu then I will go with it. If it is still $275 then I will go with the Q6600
