Is that the HD you're referring to?

The video card intercepts the video stream and decodes it faster and better than than CPU.

But then again, I guess I am pickier than most when it comes to annoying noises
I can't hear my GP installed inside my case and from 3ft away. I've padded my case with 2mm foam. With the case removed, I can hear seeks from 3 fts away though. However, it doesn't usually matter since the case cover is on and I'm usually watching something if the drive has to seek. It could be that I have Vista and 4GB RAM so everything is cached. (The 4GB cost me $15 so I just used it all)

Yes. Manyak is correct that laptop HDs can be quieter. SSD are silent as well. However, the GP is the best bet in balancing noise, cost, and storage.

I built an HTPC about a week ago for a friend with a nearly identical setup

His was:
ECS 780G (sexy mobo for ECS)
AMD 4000+
2GB OCZ Gold
(2) 250GB 7200.10
plus DVD burner, and other misc stuff

Total $360

He already had a microfly though so case wasn't included. 780G is a hell of an HTPC chipset

It might just be my really cheap case then. I foam padded it and everything and swtiched out and undervolted the fans to be absolutely inaudible even at 1ft. But I could always hear any hard drive, including the GP, at like 5-6ft away, until the scorpio. But like I said, I'm really picky when it comes to noise

Semi-True: Depending on the media stream, software & codecs used and there's a lot of different codecs formats for HD material

The GPU on the 780G can hardware decode BR / HD DVD / DVD / AVI. You just have to make sure the software your using can use hardware decoding- PowerDVD 8, WMP.. etc.

It cannot hardware decode HD mkv files- If you've ever used Azureus Vuze almost all their HD movie trailers are mkv files. This has to be done by the CPU, I have to use Media Player Classic HT & CoreAVC plugin to view these files as it's not supported by the GPU.

For the same reason anything that isn't encoded to a standard format, won't see any benefit from the onboard accelleration.

I hear you [yes, pun intended].

I am picky about noise as well... spent a few hundred on watercooling just to make my rig quiet. If the noise was due to case vibrations, you can either decouple the HD or tighten the mounting.. I use some thick rubber electical tape to help dampen the vibration while also making the fit tighter. I HIGHLY recommend the case I'm using. They use some heavy duty steel.

For right now I'm going with the HD for 2 reasons - cost and storage. The sound may become an issue as the system will be close to a seating area. I'm also going with the EW PSU. How does the RAM and sound card look?

Nope... it's an off-brand but I was surprised by the quality. You can check my pics here:

The OEM company that produced my case is Ahanix: http://ahanix.com/products/mce/

I got it on eBay here: http://stores.ebay.com/COLORCASE_HTP...QQftidZ2QQtZkm

I got the MCE303 case for $135 shipped (prices vary). It came with a USB VFD panel, IR blaster, and remote. However, you can get these seperately.
