8800GS Superclocked PciE

Thread Starter
I Own a Compaq Sr5254x(yes, i know its a budget computer.)
I Have 2 Gb Of DDr2 800mhz, A Nvidia Geforce 8400gs(installed now, but i want to install my SC 8800gs.)
*MATX*

I Have a 250 watt PSU (i have no Pci Devices installed i removed all of the original ones.)

And I was Wondering With the Molex to Pci Express Connector, would i be able to run this card, with enough power, or would it cause damage to my 8800gs.

Becasue maximum load usage for 8800gs is 50 watts, and the 8400 ran fine, with no shut offs or anyhting, and that recomends a 350 as well.

if I Cant use this, (im gonna give it a go.. and ill post back) What Matx Psu, Would You Recommend me

250W? Kinda low im my oppinion as every other person on this forum would say.

get a 500W for assurance. I don't really care about PSUs because the one in my sig costs 30 bucks and i used it for about 2 months now and i'm fine.

Probably not. I think the 8800GS requires a 350 at a MINIMUM, and even that's probably not going to cut it if you have much more than a hard disk and optical drive in your rig.

Remember, it MIGHT run, but if there isn't enough power to go around, it might run poorly (read that as, not as fast as it could go with intermittant crashing).

For the card you want, I'd recommend a 450-500 watt (although a good 650 won't cost you much more and give you some room to upgrade in the future).

Let us know how it turns out.

Buy a psu there cheap and work okay if your not gonna overclock your cpu.

Get atleast a 450 watt.

It will work fine,

I ran a intel pentium D 830 dual core 3.0ghz at 3.3ghz
Abit-NI8 SLI
2x1GB DDR2 pc6400
40gb HArd drive
7800GT SC
Dvd RW.
TV card
Sound card

On a 150 watt psu and 300 watt peak load.
ran fine for years and it still does.

Yes, i know it may or may not work, but i dont have anyhtin but a Hdd, and a lightscribe drv in the computer and i never use the disk drive..(i dont have many games on CD, i digitally buy most of them.(except for R6vegas,hl2,Fable Tlc,Gtasa,Dreamfall, and like.. 4 other games,(irelivant.)
but im gonna try, and see, because its basically an empty case.. except for a few cathode fans, that use. .less than 2w of power a piece.

Since you have a brand named computer, you will not be able to over clock your cpu/ ram, etc anyways. In my opinion, you will be fine. As you said, you don't have much hardwares in your computer. Computer components are very energy efficient when they are not overclocked.

I don't think you will damage anything if you try it - but I still think that 250W is gonna be a little lite for any card requiring a seperate 6-pin plug.

If it doesn't work - virtually any PSU at 400W or better will be more than fine.
