Scythe Infinity "Mugen"

Thread Starter
hey everyone; i'm planning on getting the scythe infinity "mugen" heatsink. i plan to use this with a pressure mod similar to s1rrah.

first off, if there is, could anybody recommend me a better cooler that'll FIT with the air flowing towards the rear of the case (towards the i/o shield) OTHER than a tuniq tower.

& if the scythe infinity is the only choice; where is the cheapest that i could buy it from; so far i've seen newegg with $45 + shipping = $52.58
(if there is a cheaper one, can you please link me?)

secondly, is there a 120mm fan that i could replace the 'stock' fan, because i've read that the stock fan sucks and cant blow that much air. i was thinking of getting the silverstone fm121.

thanks to whoever posts.

TRUE, OCZ Vendetta 2 , Tuniq Tower, Xigmatek HDT-S1283 to name a few tower HSFs that can be made to blow rearwards... they should all perform equal to or better than the Scythe Infinity as well...

As for the fan, it's really a matter of opinion... FM121s and Slip Streams are great 100+CFM 120x25mms (make sure you have a way to regulate speed - they're kinda loud on full blast)... Panaflow and Ultra Kazes are nice 120x38mms, which provide both better noise:CFM and less back-pressure when pushing through dense fins than their 25mm counterparts

the true does fit, but the air wont blow to the rear of the case because of the huge northbridge heatsink. there is an option to take it off, but it'll void the motherboard (which i dont want to do) and as for the tuniq tower fitting on my motherboard, it will work but i need to file out part of the mounting bracket.

If the Scythe Mugen is the only cooler that will fit on your motherboard, I'd say go for it. I'm loving mine. Just don't see how the Mugen could fit, but not the other coolers mentioned. The Mugen is a beast! Get ready to have your hands sliced as you try to install the thing.

Also, I don't see how you can do a pressure mod to the Mugen as the LGA775 brackets do not go across the entire middle. They just snap in on either side of that middle heatsink.

if i am not miustaken

the TRUE, OCZ Vendetta 2 , Tuniq Tower, Xigmatek HDT-S1283 all will not fit on his motherboard

the DFI mobos have an oddly large NB HS that apparently get in the way of all of those choices

This is troubling me as i plan on a buil.d aroudn that mobo, and i wanted the Xigmatech or TRUE/Ultima90 in there very badly

Yeah. After looking at that board on NewEgg, I am pretty doubtful that any of those coolers will fit. You may need to buy a different northbridge heatsink.

the scythe infinity does clear the northbridge heatsink. so does the tuniq tower. the rest of them do not clear it. the only problem with the tuniq tower as stated in the dfi lanparty dk p35-t2rs thread is that you need to file off part of the mounting hardware. but i'm 95% sure that the scythe infinity would fit. and if i do remove the stock northbridge heatsink it voids the motherboard. there was someone in the forums who took pictures of him replacing his heatsink but i'm not sure where.

the only thing i'm concerned about is if there will be enough space between one fan and my ram slots ( for the scythe infinity ) but now i'm back to step 1 to pick a better / more efficient heatsink that'll give me better temps from my zalman 9500

Might I recommend taking a look at the Thermaltake Big Typhoon VX? It's a really nice cooler, and it has C-shape heatpipes instead which may just work perfectly for your board. It's also known to be a good performer.
