Odd question..

Thread Starter
Are usb 2.0 external drives just as fast as Sata 2 drives? Not just for hard drives.. but DvD drives and whatnot..?

I'm asking because i have an idea for a new case/cooling mod i want to pull off.

no, sata II is estimated at 3000 mb/s while usb 2.0 is around 480 mb/s. keep in mind these are just theoretical and do not reflect real world performance.

you can tell the difference between USB 2.0 and normal ATA100, with IDE being much faster.

In reality, it doesn't really matter for single hard drives--USB 2.0 has a constant bandwidth of 60MB/s (480Mb/s), which is about what the average hard drive maxes out at for constant read/write speeds (SATAII drives have a constant read speed of about 65-70MB/s though). For DVD drives--I don't think the fastest DVD drive can transfer/read at even 40MB/s, so it doesn't matter for that.

just remember that 100 Mega bits per second (Mbps) equals to 11.92 Mega Bytes per second (MBps).............so 1 Giga bit per second (Gbps) equals to 119.2 Mega Bytes per second (MBps).......sata 1 is @ 1.5Gbps and sata2 is @ 3Gbps and USB 2.0 is @ 480Mbps and there is 1000Mbps in 1Giga bit....which means that sata1 equals to over 3 times the speed of USB 2.0 ......sata2 is over 6 times faster.....that is on paper

I think you can find them up to 3 feet long--just yesterday someone was showing/explaining their Antec 900 case mod/cabling and they used 3 foot SATA cables (more than that and you get signal loss apparently).
