Already available since the end of last month, Windows XP's Service Pack 3 has now finally been officially released by Microsoft. Although hiding its birth because of a bug that didn't affect many users the Redmond company is ready and willing to show off SP3 and the 1000+ updates it has integrated. Available on Windows Update, XP SP3 can also be downloaded as a standalone installed that weights 316.4 MB or in ISO form - a 554.9 MB image ready to be burnt onto CDs.

In cvasi-related news, Microsoft has also put Vista SP1 back on its automatic distribution course. Oh joy of joys.

It is a regrouping of all the updates since the release of the SP2, it is more like a security patch than a performance booster.

I wouldsay it is a bit of both. I think it would be silly to think that there are NO performance updates in SP3.

I based my statement on the reviews that roam the web. There could be performance boosts if the fixes are patching holes in XP that slow it down, so you may be right overall

I installed it last night. Took a good 30-45 minutes to dl and install. It's only a 36mb file and I have FIOS 20mbps. Everything is working fine unlike the time I tried one of the RC packs. No issue going through folders and boots up a little quicker if that's possible. I'm just happy I can integrate this into a new NLite iso. Funny thing is I have Vista Ultimate 64x coming today so SP3 will be short lived.
