two users on excel?

Thread Starter
Is it possible to have two systems and two users access and add data to a single excel file at the same time?

I have a bunch of systems coming in and want my workers to be able to audit them on two diff computers on a single excel file

no, i don't believe so. both users could open and modify the file, but when saved one will get overwritten. they won't merge.

yes it is possible. you have to save a document in a shared location. then merge documents. I will give you more detailed instructions in a few minutes when i get to my pc with Excel on it. Needless to say it is possible, and very easy.

I didnt think it was possible becasue once someone opens the file, they have the ability to modify the file. But anyone else that tries to open the file that is already opened by someone else will be able to do so as a read only. This is becasue when you open the file, it is loaded into your system memory, then when you save it, it is saved to the HDD. So there is no way for 2 people to have the same file running in their own system's memory.

But if the documents can be merged, I would be interested to know how.

ok. sorry for the delay. Again save it in a shared folder. Then go to Tools - Share Workbook. Select Allow changes by more than one user button. Changes will only take effect when EACH user hits the save button after they made a change.

Also, if you go into the Advanced setting tab, you can have it give you detailed logs of who did what and changed what info.
