Review of which is faster XP SP2 or XP SP3

Thread Starter
Well decided to do some testing of the new XPSP3 and see how it compares to XPSP2. Now first understand this was not a fresh XP2 being tested. It had every update until the release of SP3, so in reality it is closer to XP2.9. This testing was done on the rig in my signature with XP Home 32 bit.

I decided to use 3DMark06 as the only game I own with a built in Benchmark is FEAR and FEAR Extraction (same bench mark), I don't hear people saying they are playing it so the results probably wouldn't mean anything to most.

I ran each test, recorded the results and turned the machine off. Let it sit for 10 minutes and repeated. I also ran each test 5 times, 10 would have been better, but I knew my pillow would be calling, before I finished and I wanted my computer to be as close in heat and configuration as possible for each test.

Now here are the test results:

SP2
Overall average score, in XP 2.9, was 16897.2. The scores ranged from a high of 16927 to a low of 16876.

The CPU score average was 5038. The CPU scores ranged from a high of 5051 and a low of 5019.

SM 2.0 score average was 6656.6 and it ranged from a high of 6683 and a low of 6628.

Finally SM 3.0 score average was 7728.4 with a high of 7740 and a low of 7729.

SP3
Overall average score, in XP 3, was 16911.2. The scores ranged from a high of 16934 to a low of 16888.

The CPU score average was 5038.8. The CPU scores ranged from a high of 5050 to a low of 5023.

SM 2.0 score average was 6664 and it ranged from a high of 6682 and a low of 6628.

Finally SM 3.0 score average was 7734.6 with a high of 7746 and a low of 7719.

Conclusion
On paper it appears that SP3 is a small winner. However, if you look at the highs and lows for the overall scores and each indivdual component there is a larger variance than the test results difference.

In reality I would call it a draw between XP SP2 and XP SP3. Which in my opinion is a good thing, as you never know where you will end up when you get an update.

Hope this helps with the question of is XP SP3 faster than XP SP2.

My second rig got a 350 point increase in 3DMark06. But thats using pro not home. Shaved off 3 seconds off boot and shutdown time, one game is getting 7 FPS more. SP3 RTM really did something there..

I would say SP3 is faster, the more bug fixing the better the efficiency.
