think it's worth it?, all i have is the normal metal drill bits.
my other option is this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835119008
I could attempt to get a non socket A cooler with heatpipes far enough apart to stick a clip in and clamp it down, but i'm a bit skeptical about that and i don't want to waste any more $$ on shipping.
if i do break the board, ill have to go back to the 478, which doesn't exactly have a operating system to go with it. i would either have to use linux or wait forever to save up 200 bucks for a box edition of xp. oh yea or use another hp board with no agp slot.

if this is an HP, the reason it wouldnt have the holes is that they dont expect you to put an aftermarket HSF on it

that HSF is the safest route, but it is most likely cheaper to get the bit you need and drill it out. As long as you take your time and go slow you should be ok. Make sure to drill only a little bit at a time, and cool the drill bit off occasionally as the heat may melt something. Dont drill too wide either as there may be motherboard traces near the circle limits.

I'd really be surprised if you needed a better cooler that the standard clips can accommodate. Athlon XP's can get hot, but not that hot. They are single core CPU's, after all. Even at 1.8V-Core (1.65V is stock) with my Barton 2500+, it won't load past 55C with the stock cooler/fan. They're designed to take around 70C, I believe. If you're experiencing heat problems it could be your case/airflow - which in that situation the rest of your components may be running hot as well, and you could try to improve the airflow with different/more case fans. Make sure you've applied a good thermal compound like AS5 and the HSF is attached properly on the retaining clips. You could also try to look around for another HSF that works with the standard bracket. There are some decent ones with higher-CFM fans. Just my 2 cents.

k well the only reason my case airflow would be a problem is because the fan is running slower on this board. in the same case with the same fan and the p4 stuff in the sig, the p4 would idle at about 32C on an average day with modified stock cooling(a somewhat large stock cooler with an 80mm fan wired on). i used to have 2 92mm case fans, but i took out the intake one because it was kinda loud, and it wasn't all that much cooler. i played around with the case fans, but no significant cooling. my guess was i would either have to lap the cooler or buy this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835119008
or both.

XP is going out? scary!

thats a decent cooler at a decent price. Try lapping your existing HSF though, doesnt take long and might make a difference.

most local hardware stores have the sandpaper, and to find out what grit you need there are loads of guides here, search the forums for them... as for thermal compound, you dont need loads... since there isnt as much contact surface between the cpu and the fan, I would suggest using very little.
