Spelling? I personally like spybot search and destroy or avast. Both work really well. There are a bunch of others that are just as capable though.

It's easier to prevent them, then to try getting rid of them.
I usually go with a process killer, reboot in safemode and delete the files myself.

Depends on how bad the infection is...

For a light infection, I'd recommend a very good Anti-Virus Software (NOD32, ZoneAlarm Pro, AVG Anti Virus, etc...), then I'd put a good adware/spyware killer with it (I use Advanced Windows Care) and finally a virus behavior spotter (I use PC Tools Threatfire).

For a drastic infection, honestly, I'd nuke the PC, reinstall your O/S and apps and then put down the layer of defense listed above after downloading all of your O/S security updates. That way, you prevent the "bad stuff" from getting on there in the first place.

Finally, I'd educate all users of the PC in question to NOT blindly click the various pop-ups, download links, messages, and everything else under the sun that loads virus and spyware apps to your system. I'd also tell them to NOT go surfing in the "red light district" of the internet without protection (personally, I make a backup copy of my PC using Norton Ghost or Acronis TrueImage before I do any such surfing just as a precaution.)

Being a smarter internet surfer is the best way to prevent serious viruses from infecting your computer(s).

Yep. AVG 8 is very good, comes with Anti Spyware/Virus and if your friend doesn't know how to spot a dodgy link/pop-up it also comes with a real time link scanner which tells you what links are safe to surf on, but it does slow down browsing though, but hey you can disable that best of all its free.

Also NOD32 suite is highly recommended but you have to pay for that one.

First start by running msconfig, Start> Run... then disable the start up. once this is done, restart your pc. Now, Start with AVG Free Edition, do a complete scan, from there, do a scan with AdAware 2007, once this is done, run a scan with Spybot S&D, make sure you do all of these without restarting the pc. Now re-enable the startup options in the msconfig. Then get Autoruns. google it. with autoruns, delete anything where it says file not found instead of C:\\program files... etc... restart the pc. should be good for a long while.
