Most people that experience problems with a SP update don't reformat prior to installing it (which your should or you're likely to experience issues) most users here run tweaked windows that most non-gamers would not do, and it can cause issues with a SP update, thats why its always better to just reformat and install a SP on stock/default settings.

I can see the logic in what Murlocke is recommending. But I really don't want to reformat and start from scratch just because of the time involved in doing so.

Would doing a 'repair install' with XPSP2 media to get back to basic XPSP2, followed by SP3 install immediately thereafter provide the same environment as doing a reformat - XPSP2 install - SP3 install ?

My laptop crashed and I had to reformat after a SP3 install but on a desktop system it worked perfectly and runs even better now after some tweaking.

Or that's what i heard at least.
Well there are other things that have been added that were not ever part of any of those updates, such as NAP (Network Access Protection) and Black Hole Router Detection.
