I have a decent computer now, but over the summer I wan tto upgrade a lot. I want a quad core, a nice motherboard, 1066 RAM and a fast FSB. So here is what I have compiled so far.

Motherboard: ASUS P5K Deluxe/Wifi
Processor: Q6600 2.4GHz | FSB at 1066
RAM: 2BG GSKILL at 1066, maybe 4GB if I feel like it later

I figured the RAM to FSB ratio would be great, plus an overclock will help a lot too. (I plan on overclocking the heck out of it). What I am asking everyone at OCN is what is a great MOBO and processor and RAM speeds. I am not looking to spend way too much, but I would go up to 200 on the mobo, around 250 on the processor, and RAM isn't a problem, it's never too expensive.

What do you think I should do, or is this setup already a good one?

Thanks a lot!

What is your reasoning on the Quad? An E8400 is a great CPU. Also with an 9x multi on the Q6600 if you run the ram at 1:1 ratio 3.6Ghz is only 800mhz, 3.8Ghz is 845mhz, & 4Ghz is 888mhz. Any good 800mhz ram should be fine with those speeds. I'd got for 4GB of ram, it is a good improvement in Vista x64.

Agreed with Emeril , personally owning both of those CPU's , go for the e8400 if you want to overclock the heck out of it. But it depends on your usage.

I wanted the quad for the future. I read on here somewhere that a quad would be more beneficial for the future. Especially when it is only another 20 or 30 dollars more than the 3.0 dual cores. But I will take that advice!

Thanks a bunch!

The setup is a good one but if you want OC the heck of it you should look for another board, if you go with the quad you should look for a board that have individual CPU GTL Reference setting for each core, example DFI P35, X38 or X48. Why, you gonna be able to OC a bit higher.

For the future, i don´t know about that, sure if you do encoding, decoding or videorendering it maybe be a little better but if you do games there is very few that support more then two cores and when games that support more then two cores hits the market Intel have released there Nehalem and then the socket 775 quad are probably out of date.

If you go with dual core you should look at ASUS Gaming series, DFI P35, X38 or X48 or Gigabyte P35, X38, X48-DS4, -DQ6. E8400 is a good choice it´s rather cheap for the performance you get.

Go with memory@1066 you have a little better OC headroom and go 4Gb RAM because you be better of if you go Vista 64bit.

i wouldn't recommend getting the E8400. It has been known to burn out after a while. see thier not too voltage friendly.

i would go for the Q6600 and then the P35 DFI DK T2RS. that will be a sweet board. along with some Team Xtremem RAM or mushkin RAM and you set.

the ram is very tweakable with that motherboard and you should get some good bandwith out of them.

Awesome. So would you think this is more of a personal choice? Between the quad and dual core? I would want the quad because i do a lot of multi tasking... But maybe I really don't have a need for it I dunno.

I second that if you do a lot of multitasking, that DFI board is a very good choice, you should check it out.

Read this article of another DFI board, it´s a little bit more expensive but it seems like a really good quad core tweaker.

Wow!! I found an open box DFI LP UT P35 T2R board, and I am amazed. Will the RAM be a bottleneck though? it is only 800MHz
