Houston... we need a defrag!

srsly... this is really quite an interesting story.

Note to all the hoarders of dodgy-pron "Do not rely on re-entry for the destruction of your data... rather, take the GCHQ approach" :ED

The HDD is 8 years old at time of crash. That means the HDD is from 1995. The shuttle is much older than that, where its first flight is in 1981. NASA can't upgrade shuttle components every 5% improvement the technology receives like the computer geeks on these forums.

In 1995, HDDs were ~800MB, with testing, shielding and selection taking 1-2 years, in 1993, a 400MB hard drive would most likely must have been top of the line. SO STOP *****ING about NASA having retarded technology when you don't know the facts, actually take the time to read the article if you are gonna post about it! spammers

I found this thread to have less than half a dozen smart people who replied.
The rest of you are pathetic to bicker about something you didn't fully read and haven't a clue about. PATHETIC!

Well, considering that most of the data is saved as text, in one format or another, they don't need 5 500 gig SATA II in RAID to store what they need.

Hopefully NASA will incorporate SSDs for future shuttles/misions, then.
