Mobile AMD Athlon 64 Processor Search

Thread Starter
I've been searching for a replacement CPU for a friends laptop computer but I'm begining to think they are no longer available.

Does anyone know where I can get my hands on a Mobile AMD Athlon 64 3400+, 754-pin Micro-PGA Package CPU. That's the 2.2GHz 1MB L2 Cache version.

I haven't seen a mobile 3400+, but if the motherboard allows it, you can try using a Turion 64 CPU (also S754, and in theory SHOULD be drop-in swappable). There are many Turions on ebay, and similar clock speeds should give the same performance since they're just more power-efficient CPU's with the same cache, HTT speed, etc.. Anyone know if it WON'T work?

Do you think I would have to update the BIOS if I was going to try putting a Turion in? If so that's gonna be my next problem as I cant work out where to download the latest BIOS and drivers. Everest tells me that my Clevo D400J notebook has a VIA K8N800 motherboard, it might be me but I find it pretty dam difficult to find anything on the VIA web sites.

well i would do it just for safe measure, but be sure to backup your original bios first.

when throwing in a new cpu which you are unsure of its always a good idea to upgrade the bios to support new microcode.

To be honest, I don't know if you'd have to update the BIOS or not. I've never experienced a CPU upgrade for a computer from one CPU revision to another. Probably it would require a bios update, but that's just my gut feeling. Don't know how to go about it on a motherboard though (does yours have a floppy drive?). I'm not much help in this area. And yeah, with a VIA chipset, you might have problems finding BIOS versions, or BIOS updates. But if it works, please post how you went about it!
