"2.8x in 3-way SLI mode"

I would so buy 3 if that was true. And since when SLI gives 2x performance.

The 9800GTX is slightly better then the GTS. But there is no doubt they are very similar.

Yep. The numbers (Expreview) show an 9800GTX performs between 4-5% better, on average, than an 8800GTS 512MB in games. Just for comparison, an overclocked GTS (exact same clocks as the 9800GTX) actually outperforms a standard 9800GTX. The argument would be a 9800GTX can generally overclock to higher maximum frequencies (and this does seem to hold true, based on user accounts).

This 9800GTX for $269 is a relatively good deal compared most GTX's on the market - considering the least expensive ones usually go for ~$300 (though some do have rebates in addition). IMO I still believe an 8800GTS is still a far better value - like some factory OC'd editions going for ~$250 (and $30 MIRs), which will perform nearly the same (possibly better) than a standard 9800GTX. But if you must have that 9800GTX, this one is probably your best bet.
