The fastest non-raid hdd?

Thread Starter
I was just wondering what the fastest is, I know raptors are supposedly getting beat by these 32mb cached, single platters but what models or link me to it if you can I need a speed upgrade.
Samsung Spinpoint F1 I think it was. Budget of course.

If you have no budget.... I recommend this one. Good luck finding it in store though, yet.
The VelociRaptors will be out very soon & I think you can find them at select vendors right now for a premium.

I have 2 of the 750gb Samsung Spinpoint F1s and they are on par/if not faster than 2x74 Raptors in a RAID0 config. I know you aren't looking for the RAID results, but the seek time should be on par in a single-disk configuration. If the Velociraptor is out of your range, look for a RaptorX (~ $150/150Gb)

The Samsung Spinpoint F1 (HD753LJ) 750GB is faster than a raptor at most tasks.
But also Seagate have a very quick HD out or coming out soon.
Also WD have a new 300GB version of the RAPTOR coming out very soon called the VelociRaptor and is ment to be very fast indeed.

For SATA drives, the new velociraptor would hold the top spot.

After that it gets a bit more complicated, the older raptors with 74GB platters, lag behind the newest 7200 rpm drives in many areas, but are still faster in tasks that access large numbers of small files. The very oldest raptors (the GDs, with 36GB platters) are garbage.

The Spinpoint F1s are very fast. So are the segate 7200.11s (and the 310AS/410AS models of the 7200.10s, which are essentially 250GB 7200.11s). The new WD SEs with 320GB platters are comparable to the F1.

I guess I should have put that the budget will probably stop around $120, but I only need about 250gb anything else is just gravy.
All of these drives are very fast and most are well under $120.

New WD with a single 320GB platter - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136074

Same thing but with two platters - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136218

I have one of these in another computer, extremely fast - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822152100

I have two of these in my main computer (not in a RAID), nearly as fast as the spinpoints. They are essentially 250GB 7200.11s and use the a single 250Gb platter - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148262

Any of these drives will be nearly as fast, overall, as the 3.5" raptors. You could RAID 0 some of them for less than the cost of a single 74GB raptor.

I have a seagate 7200.10 250GB 410AS and I'm seriously regretting buying it.
It's not really faster than the WD 640GB.. and the WD only costs 99.99
