SMP Client Stopping again + WTH?

Thread Starter
So, the last few days i've been fighting the "stopping-for-no-apparent-reason" problem. I decided to check my stats this morning & look what my daily average is- lol:

Anyways, I've posted my problems before & have done everything that has been suggested to me. This time though, I decided to follow a post that Mr. Gibson submitted on a different member's thread involving installing the Windows SMP client twice.
  • Removed all trace of first install.
  • Re-Downloaded SMP Client from Stanford's site
  • Downloaded the Affinity Changer & Installed it
  • Installed the first SMP Client into a newly created folder "#1" - Keep in mind that I haven't selected anything but the defaults during installation, not even "Large Work Units".
  • Installed the second SMP Client into a newly created folder "#2".
  • Assumed the Affinity Changer was running because when launching the exe for it, I recieved an error message stating that it conflicted with a running service already blah-blah.
  • Launched #1 Client.
  • Waited for #1 to get going & started up #2 client and received a warning that it was running already & to press any key to exit (couldn't find the 'Any' key btw).
  • Launched #2 again & it started working just like #1.

At this point, all is cool. I'm doing 1% at around 12-13 minutes in each window. If I'm around, I'll watch it for 15-20 minutes or more & note that it's running fine. I'll come back in 4-5 hours & the clients will look like they are running, but are doing nothing. The F@H cores are showing up in Task Manager, but aren't using any of the system resources. I restart the clients again & they will just repeat this process.

The logs really don't give an indication of what the issue might really be, just this is listed:
"Folding@Home Client Shutdown at user request."

In my previous posts, I was noting this problem with a single SMP Client so this issue is not related to running two instances. These problems are with The Abyss rig in my sig. It's not a stability issue as I'm not having any problems when running other resource-intensive applications.

I do have a suspicion that it might be something that I am doing wrong, but I can't put my finger on it. With that said, the reason why I suspect this is that I just put together another system that has the same issue, but not nearly as often does it stop working like this build. That one has a QX9650@3.8GHz, 2x2gb G-Skill PC2-8000@5-5-5-15 2.1v on a Gigabyte DS3L board. I don't have it quite dialed in yet, but I'm assuming it's probably because of some very minor instability issues. This is awaiting a new Techstation that's being built for me then I'll get it rock solid.

Sorry for being long winded, but I really want to get to the bottom of this issue & would appreciate any help or suggestions! I'm not hesitant to try a VM if it comes to it either.

THANKS!!!

When you are prompted to replace the older version already running, select no.

You must enter the advanced options of each client and assign unique machine ID's.

1) Install Client 1, enter advanced options> Machine ID #1(should be default)

2) Install Client 2 (When you are prompted to replace the older version already running, select no)
, enter advanced options> Machine ID #2

3) Install affinity changer, look in task manager(running processes) to verify it is running.

hey Indignity, sorry to hear that your having problems again. there is one more option if your still having problems. there is a slight possiblitiy that the FAH program just doesn't like your current o/c. if your problems persits, try to downclock to 3.4, just for giggles, see if that fixes it. i know you stated that your o/c is solid, but the FAH program can be a bit picky.

here is an example(different situation though) i had my quad prime stable, and was folding on smp for several months, no problem what so ever. i then tried running bal3wolfs VMware program. the program kept stopping and having errors, after being suggested that my o/c wasn't stable(which i couldn't understand at the time), i down clocked my o/c, and that fixed the problem.

The irony of this is that I am now stable running VMware/Ubuntu! Of course now that I type that I will crash...

I think you may have hit it on the head Chris. I'll calm the OC down on both PCs & see where that gets me this weekend.

Appreciate the reply as usual! Thanks for taking care of us!

that is odd, but dont forget that you are folding with an e8400 and he is folding with a q6600, running dual instances. there are alot of differences there.

I'm gonna knock on a big piece of wood right now, but I've got her dialed down to 3.2 & Changed out the RAM to another set of the G.Skill 2x2gb PC2 8000. It's been running constant now for 7+ hours.

By the way, this is a Q6700

Thanks again Chris!

{Edit} No comments on the PPD in the screenshot in the first post? At least I enjoyed laughing at it
