[TG]Video games don’t turn children into blood-thirsty killers – Harvard research - Page 2

You know, decades ago, kids who are now adults and elders watch cartoons on TV as entertainment. Classic cartoons like the Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, and many more. Don't tell me those weren't violent. When outside they'd play cops and robbers, cowboys and indians, etc. Also violent themes. They didn't grow up to be criminals and violent folks, did they?

I guess we humans find violence entertaining. But we somehow can deduct that hitting someone on the head with a hammer, or dropping a piano on someone, isn't something that we can do in real life.

I want to go throw this article in the face of my Journalism professor (like 1 1/2 y. ago). He gave me a C on the final paper because I argued that the study he gave us on video games and violence was complete bogus (I didn't use that wording, obviously). I had multiple interviews clearly defending my argument. I also used multiple stories (mostly relating to GTA) and argued that it wasn't the video game that forced them to kill--it may have been a trigger--but something else was def. wrong with them.

I was so pissed. I almost went in and argued with him. He (the journalism professor, mind you...JOURNALISM) started the semester off by 'proving' how horrid media and new technology is for you...if you hate the subject, move on bud.

Ethical standards? Do you think people didn't murder other people before video games were released? How about we take a look at the crusades. Let’s go back to the Middle Ages where people were killed in broad daylight for speaking out against their tyrant king (not that similar things don’t occur today). The world hasn’t changed at all, my friend—we've finally found a scapegoat.

I don't think any of us are arguing that our surroundings have no affect on us--but a violent game certainly doesn't force you to kill.

Lol I cannot believe media and society is still so lame as to blame video games for violence. My son is 8 and he plays all sorts of video games has been playing them since he was about 5-6 years old. He has played COD for about 2 years , he has played multiple GTA games on ps2 and 360 , splinter cell , hitman and many many other games and he is very smart and not at all violent. Playing video games helps increase brain activity , hand eye coordination and he understands very well that its JUST A GAME.
I do not see how they can blame video games when children see far more graphical images on T.V , turn on CNN almost an time of day and they are talking about someone being blown up , kidnapped, shot, stabbed, murdered and any other gory thing you can imagine and its ALL REAL. Whats going on around us everyday is far far worst then any video game ever existing. I don't think we should shelter our children from whats really happening in the world because lets face it they grow up and boy is it gonna be a shocker to them when they step out into it .

Didn't they? Then why are there any criminals now?

And Violent video games do affect kids, I am living proof (I started swearing and being more violent after playing violent video games and watching south park, etc), But the thing is, Not to ban them, to teach Parents to not let their kids watch or play these games, unless they feel their child is mature enough to be able to play the game without it affecting them. (Which is true in a fair amount of cases, I know a 13 year old, who is more mature than half the members here!)

My son is the same , he is only 8 but you can sit and talk to him like he is 14-15 he understands what is real and what is not he knows that games are just something that was made up and generated for entertainment purposes and that he cannot go do the same thing on the street. He does not swear and is not at all violent. You just have to let them know how to keep games and TV away from the real world. Some of the cartoons that come on these days are worst then the video games. It depends solely upon the maturity of the children and the parents.I know many children who do not own a console or computer and are far more violent then my son.

You can keep sheltering your kids thinking that keeping them from the real world is helping. When one of them ends up as the next gunman on the clock tower I hope im not the one who has to take the final shot. What people like you are failing to realize is that sheltering your kids never gives them a truthful representation of right and wrong to balance against. Nor do they adequately learn to cope and handle these situations. Point blank if you don't want your kids playing the game then wrap them in Nerf padding and keep them at home and don't buy it. Its really that simple. But do not expect me and the rest of the country to share your enthusiasm for or deal with the repercussions of a lack of adequate parenting on the part of American parents. If you people don't like the game then don't buy it for your kids which is how they get age rated games in the first place and tell them why don't cry to me or the country. Ive lived real life more horrid than any game ive ever played and im a competent professional who contributes to my society. Not bad for a life long gamer (Intellivision was my first console) whos family were abusive drunks and druggies and is a veteran of the Gulf war.
