[TG]New Congressional bill to require ID for all MATURE-rated video games

With Grand Theft Auto 4 selling like hotcakes and making over $500 million in the first week, a Republican and Democrat have introduced a bill that would make it a bit harder for teenagers to buy mature games. Republican Representative Lee Terry from Nebraska and Democrat Representative Jim Matheson from Utah introduced the Video Games Ratings Enforcement Act which would require retailers to check IDs and not selling ‘Mature’ or ‘Adults Only’-rated games to anyone under 18-years-old.
Considering it is a republican and democrat authoring the bill, leave the political smack talk out because it obviously doesn't belong here, much less on the forum in the first place.

OT: I have to say I don't really mind this because the retailers should have been doing this from the very beginning, so it nice to see them going after the retailers instead of the game industry.

There's already a law like this around and if the stores get caught selling they get hit with some fines. Employees could care less and sell the game anyway.

This won't do anything.

Are you referring to a local/state law, because this will be a federal law that no one will have a choice but to enforce.

Not entirely sure, it's been a while since I read about it. Whatever it was, it obviously didn't work.

Most employees are far too apathetic to check ID's, and unless they do sting operations, I honestly can't see any store getting caught.

This kind of thing is too hard to enforce. Hell, kids still buy cigarettes in stores and that is much more serious.

I like this Idea being that I'm over 18,well over 18 lol. anyway if this law was to actively be inforced then game designers would be more apt to produce games designed for adults. with all the good stuff you look for in an R rated movie blood guts foul language sex and a real on the streets type of atmosphere even some more dirty jokes and they would not have to worry about being sued by some parents that never pay attention to what thier kids are doing 90% of the time and feels that they have to jump on some high horse and stop every one from enjoying filth because they failed to stop thier own child to start with. If your kids are watching it now and enjoy it its to late.

Good, most stores require it anyways. This will put the pressure off violent games, as kids won't legally access to them without the failure parents.

I personally think this is a good idea, although (being a 17 y'o) I thought mature games could be bought at 17.

Or is it a state law?

Or do all game stores not care about it? I live in Vermont, I'm gonna do some research on that.

I'm pretty sure the ESRB is a nation wide thing. If a federal law prevents anyone under 18 to buy these games either the ESRB will have to create a new rating above "Mature" or they will have to ammend "Mature" to 18 years of age. If they don't change the ESRB ratings this law would totally undermine the whole point.

If this is the case who would be the one to decide which games apply? Hopefully we wont see the politicians trying to rate games, that would be an epic fail.
