I believe i should have a say in this thread as i kinda have first hand experience with this as i moved from England to Canada. So, basically, PSU's for computers will work fine in either the US or UK as long as they have the switch on the back or an auto ranger (i think Silverstone PSU's have this feature), your monitor however will NOT work in the UK, i had this problem and decided to ring round multiple places, its the same with TV's, it costs more to have the transformer changed in your monitor/TV than it does to buy a whole new unit, The same goes with 90% of things with the transformers built inside the product, the easiest way to check if it works is firstly check the label, things like cell phone chargers say 'input voltage: 100 - 240VAC' and as the UK runs at about 240V at 50hz they are all ok overseas usage. As you already stated, things that have a high current draw will not work without a transformer change so forget about taking over any monitors/printers/TV's or any high power appliances, hope this helped

Also why are you moving to one of the most expensive places to live in the world? I have my reasons for leaving and im sure you have yours for going but be prepared, just as a guideline, a 500ml bottle of Coca cola will cost around 1.50pounds (about $3) in London. And oh yeah, as already stated, if your gonna upgrade parts, do it before you go as you wont find newegg prices in the UK

EDIT: just saw the bit about your router, that will not work either as the UK uses a different phone system to the US, your ethernet cables will work though

I just got a job offer there, starting in July 2009. I live and work in Manhattan right now so moving to London won't be a huge increase in cost of living for me. Haven't figured out where exactly I'll be living, but I'll probably figure that out closer to the move date. Needless to say, I'm really excited!

A little o/t but if any of the Londoners on this board have any other general tech-related insights (i.e. what mobile providers are good / bad, what ISPs are good / bad, what the fastest internet available is, all that good stuff) I'd love to hear them!

Hey FGold, i use O2 for my phone provider ( you can always hammer out a bargain. i got 1000minutes for 25GBP a month and unlimited data for 7.50GBP, and isp wise. Personally i use UKOnline as ive never.. ever in 3years had a problem with them and their cost vs performance is good.

You could consider one of these transformers.

However, I'm no electrician so could be more complicated when using PCs.

Major phone networks like: Vodafone, T-Mobile, o2, Orange

Broadband in London: I would recommend Bethere
