my 350W has as much power on +12V as a 500W SeaSonic?!

My 350W PSU has dual 12V rails at 17A each

the 80-plus certified Seasonic 500W models, retailing for $100, have dual 12V rails at 17A each

so there is no reason for me to upgrade PSU's, unless i somehow need craploads of power on the 5 and 3v for some unknown reason??

are dual 12V rails at 17A each enough for me to add a 9600GT to my current system with my overclock bumped up to 500X8 at 1.5VCore? I'm planning on more ram, watercooling, 9600gt, better hd, etc.

On the 350w PSU, each rail is able to provide up to 17A... but not simulaneously! If it could do it simulaneously, it would be a 410-450w PSU.

What 350w PSU? At what temperature did they rate their PSU? What's the voltage regulation? What's the ripple? What's the rating on the +12v rail?

afaik, the amp rating is for the maximum amps that rail can handle, not the actual output of amps.



Someone correct me if I am wrong on this, it gets quite confusing.


(also, it is the quality of tha hardware inside that matters too, not just the numbers)

No, 17A +12v rail + 17A +12v rail does not = 34A. I'm assuming you're referring to these two?


As you can see the 500w is rated at 408w on the +12v rails, and the 350w is rated at 324w, that is a 25% increase in available power. The rated amps, especially when their are separate +12v rails are not a complete indication of available power.

You should be good. I ran a overclocked (3.6) q6600, 2 sata drives, two dvd drives, 9600gt, 4-120mm fans and a 200mm fan with a 380w Antec earthwatts PSU that has 17a dual rails with no problems.

The antec psu is currently powering a AMD opty 165, ati 1900gt, dvd drive, 3-120mm fans and a 1 sata hd in a folding rig that runs 24/7

350w Seasonic = 27A on the +12v

500w Seasonic = 34A on the +12v

Both are more than sufficent for the OP's system, even if he adds a 9600GT.

Need to figure out the real wattage toward to 12v rails. 17A is max. In the 350W case, it will be a 400W PSU if these two rails can have 17A (2x17x12=408).

"that has 17a dual rails" means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

What does matter is "+12V1, +12V2 max. load: 324W" that is printed on your EarthWatts PSU. That means 27A is available on the +12v rail. (324/12 = 27)

Really, dralb put it so simple you can't possibly mis-understand.

Dead on... except I would've said current in place of those last two "amps".

The amperage rating is only a designation of where the particular rail is "capped off". It has NOTHING to do with +12V capability. They are simply not additive. The only number that matters as it pertains to the +12V is the "total combined" rating, usually in Watts. If you want this number to also be in Amps, you simply divide by 12.

so the amperage rating means nothing really, the wattage rating is the real output capacity and to get the REAL amperage i assume i divide by the voltage of the rail. correct?

however its more than sufficient for my specific need so in my case my seasonic is fine! yay
