Well, if it has OCP(Over Current Protection), then the amperage rating is important in that you cannot load any one rail beyond that rating.

No. They are all related: Amperage = Wattage/Voltage

What we are saying is: "The individual rail's amperage/wattage rating does not matter. The total combined amperage/wattage is what counts."

i think thats exactly what i said....

the first instance of 'amperage rating' i meant the 17A that it said on the back is not actually meaning that the 12v rails can output 17A*12V of power....but the total Wattage rating / 12 would be the real amperage

but i have another question: why even have multiple rails for the same voltage? i assume it helps share current load? i dont quite understand...

Yes, you get the gist of things.


Just to be clear, some PSUs report their rails in ampere while other report in wattage. Same with the total combine ratings... some provide ampere while others give wattage. That's why I was confused on why you said 'amperage rating' because you didn't describe which one!

ah the pseudo-dual rail (most dual rail PSU's i assume) is for the purpose of limiting the maximum current that goes to any one device and prevents like a surge of current?

The pseudo-rails are to conform to an electical safety standard. This old spec recommended that the load on any individual line not to exceed like 230w. This works out to 18-19A and why you see most rails limited to that. The reason for the rule was to limit the load on the rail to reduce voltage drop and risk of damaging the wire. Therefore, the limit is more about the wires than the devices on it.

Virtually all PSU that are multi-rail use OCP. I can only think of 3-4 units that actually are dual +12v.

Simple formula
Maximum total combined wattage on the combined 12v rails divided by 12 = amperage
