First time overclock, need some help

Thread Starter
Just put together my first system to overclock, this is the setup:

GA P35 DS3L motherboard rev2 updated to F8 bios
Dual core e2160 processor 1.2850 VID rev M0
2x1 GB GeIL DDR2 800 memory, 444-12 timings 2.2 - 2.3v
Antec 500w Neopower PSU

I've done some research before attempting to OC but there are some bits of info I can't seem to find and I'm running into some troubles getting a good stable overclock.

I started off just using stock settings to get all my software and drivers installed. From there I downloaded CPUID, Orthos, coretemp, speedfan, and prime95. I haven't used prime95 to stress yet, when i run it, it doesn't load both cores, i think I have an outdated version or something but anyway... I have been using orthos to test stability but Im' not 100% sure of which test best tests my stability. Should I be doing small fft (cpu) or blend (cpu+ram) or both, but in a certain order? So that's my first issue, whats the best way to test stability? I know that test should run for 12+ hours but which ones? Which order?

Secondly, im having trouble getting to my goal overclock.

As of now I seem to have my system @ 333x9 for 3ghz on this chip. I upped the ram voltage to 2.2 as per its spec at 444-12 timings. I upped the vcore to 1.3675 and left the MCH volt and FSB volt to defaults. I ran the blend test on orthos for about 4 hours and ran into an error. The system stayed on but orthos was beeping at me and at that point it was the middle of the night so I gave up, I will do some more tweaking today. But what should I be tweaking at this point? The vcore? Right now my temps are fine. I idle at 29-31c and load maxes out at around 57c. I have the ram underclocked atm to run as 1:1 with the CPU.

My goal is 400x8 for 3.2ghz and 1:1 with the ram running at 800mhz but im having a hard time getting 333x9 stable, where should I go from here?

welcome to oc.net m8, and dont forget to rep those who help.

gl with your oc, im sure you will get 3.2ghz m8 but you might need about 1.4v under load.

Welcome to OCN rfatcheric!

Before we give you any further advice, please fill out your system specs by clicking here. Please be as detailed as possible.

Just some quick things to help get you started, make sure you disable the options that allow the computer to underclock your CPU when it's not being used, here's a screenshot that should help you.

Lock the PCIe frequency at 100MHz.

Also, you can access your memory timings by pressing ctrl+F1 while in the BIOS.

You may have already known those three things but they are common questions with Intel and that board.

Also, it's important to isolate each component when overclocking. Start by setting your memory to run at 1:1 with the CPU. This will underclock it a lot but guarantee its not the memory causing instability. Once you find the max of your CPU, then consider increasing the ratio to speed up the memory.

Fill in those specs and if possible, take a screenshot of both your CPU-Z CPU tab and your CPU-Z memory tab and post them here.

Thanks for the help so far. I did actually have all those settings correct. I filled out my profile and will post pics of CPU-Z when I get home tonight.

I did manage to get up to 3.2ghz last night (400x8). Had to up the voltage in the bois to 1.46xx to get the load voltage in CPU-Z to stay above 1.4v and that got me stable. My temps would max out at 69c but stayed mostly around 67c. I plan on replacing this chip within a year so if it runs a little hot I'm fine with that, as long as it wont die in a week... It idles at 31c so it hink it should be ok. I think I've reached my goal! Thanks for the help so far.

nps bro thats why we post here

edit

now you have it stable try and lower the volts if you can, as too much will cause higher temps.
