Crashing problem

Hi, I'm new to overclocking and I got this odd problem. My card is X1950GT and I read this to start overclocking. After installing the omega drivers for ATI and ATItools (some old version), I started the "Find MAX Core" utility. The defaults were 500.0 (Core) and 600.0 (Mem).

After running over six hours, the process wasn't complete. The 3d view had stopped mysteriously after 2 hours and 11 minutes, so I figured that nothing would happen anymore and clicked "Abort". Everything was fine, nothing serious happened.

Then I started to read different overclocking manuals, which dealt with ATItools and found out that one should make a new profile before overclocking anything. I was using the "default" profile while doing the upper. I downloaded ATItools v. 0.26, the newest, created a new profile, but this time something was different. The default memory had risen to 1000.50 and the core had dropped to 499.0, but still, I clicked the "Find MAX Core" button. It prompted a message that said something about my memory being overclocked already and thus the program could have some issues with the dots and artifacts. I clicked "OK" and suddenly everything went black. My monitor was on, but nothing happened. I waited and waited until I had to press the power button. Restarted, opened ATItools, tried to load the default profile, same thing. I can't do anything with ATItools now. Everything makes my system crash.

Although this happens, I have no problems outside the overclocking event. Everything runs fine, but I'm a bit concerned about what I just did.

Any help? Is this normal and, of course, how do I overclock correctly?

edit. would it be helpful to install the official ati drivers?

yes it would be helpful if you did...that way if it does the same thing with the official drivers then you know its not omegas drivers( cause ive nothing but bad luck with them). And using find max really isnt the way to go i think...i would try to find out how well they overclock first..and i think the GT's arent compatible with with ati tools. I would also give ATI tray tools a try. Which i have included the latest version attached to this message.

I was thinking of the same thing, try Ati Tray Tools. It is very similar to ATI tools, it may work better. It looks like the ati tool version you have does not recognise properly your card. Have you tried the utility from the ATI Catalyst Control Pannel? They are included in the official Catalyst drivers and they tend to work well, even tho the OCs achieved through this utility can be rather conservative.

Try these other two tools, they could give better results. Cheers!
