GRID demo out! - Page 8

While it looks good, and the damage is excellent they obviously forgot that cars actually need to have physics in the game. DiRT has less input lag than this game... and there is so little feel on the game for what is going on - its like the wheel isn't actually connected in any way to the front wheels on the cars. The cars also have about 20x the grip they should - i drove the BMW E90 and that has about as much grip as an F1 car would.

The drifting is shocking... all it feels like is they turned the grip down and kept some lovely devoid steering feel just to help you drift when the basic idea of drifting is driving on feel.

There is also no clutch, so you can quite easily find the perfect RPM for the car and get a stupidly good start, instead of having to balance the power away - using the clutch too.

The car sounds aren't great either - im not sure who's bright idea it was to make the cars louder on the outside than on the ****pit view... inside has basically no engine noise, just a bit of gear whine and all the other cars seem to sound like is a gearbox too. The brakes also constantly glow despite the fact that they would cool down when you are driving and not using them... the only way i have found to stop them from glowing is to actually stop and then they cool down really quickly - almost as if codemasters made them get stupidly hot due to air friction.

All it really feels like is DiRT with some new cars and on tarmac instead of off road.

If they can manage to fix all the above i may be a bit more interested in the full game, but at the moment i couldn't care less if it came out.
totally agree with you on those points. like i said earlier the car physics are totally inaccurate. Its more like the handling you'd expect on Wipeout. Its a real shame because codemasters really proved themselves as top developers for the racing game genre with the TOCA series on ps1+ps2 and obviously with the colin mcrae rally series. They actually perfected the driving physics in Colin Mcrae 2005. Each wheel had its own primary pivot which meant all-wheel drive was very realistic when you drove the rally car on any surface. Either its a completely new team or they just forgot about it but codemasters games really have changed in the past 2 years. Their games have not only become incredibly americanised but less realistic. They could really do better, and the TOCA series that this game is supposed to follow up to is worth better. I swear driving cars in this game is like trying to steer a spin-the-bottle game

Wow I'm surprised to see some haters, I found the game very good.

1) The graphics are amazing, and to accompany that, the framerate is very Smooth
2) The replay feature is pretty ****in cool
3) Cars seemed to handle well for me and were very responsive
4) AI seemed pretty good
5) GUI is nice

The only thing I didn't like was when accelerating too fast from a dead stop, one peels out too easily.... Maybe it's because of the slicks but it seems a bit too slippery.

As for you racing game connoisseurs: Maybe you are trying to play this game like you play your other racing games... Try playing it with a fresh mentality.

Then again it's just a demo and none of this is final.

But so far, I like it.

*EDIT*

I did play this on PS3, not computer... So the PS3 controller might have been a factor.... Found it very easy to drive, and take corners well.

I'd have to agree with you 100% there . I LOVED this demo. I would NEVER try it out with a keyboard (as I never try a racing game with keyboard anymore)...but I felt the driving was pretty well on par with DiRT and other top racing games. This is no racing simulator, like some of you seem to think, its just a game.

k after a combined like 3-4 hours of trying to drift with a keyboard i have come to the conclusion it is impossible to beat the ****er on EASY... if you don't have a steering wheel i recommend never buying this game. Bitterness level is extremely high right now from this game.

I played the demo on my PS3 and to be honest, I enjoyed it better than Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. It looks like Grid could be a better game than GT5 if the final version of GT5 is anything like the Prologue.

I have you beat, I made the mustang rollover many times. Once it rolled over twice. It's odd tho, I can get back and racing so soon after flipping the car.

OMG!
After playing for only a few races, I finally got used to the handling.

Thank god its realistic. I couldn't stand another game built entirely on drift physics *cough* need for speed *cough*

It's really hard to get used to the realism of driving, especially in first person mode with driver's aid turned off (I want a USB clutch now )

Graphics are so-so, I really need a new monitor to be able to appreciate it, everything really looks the same on a 17".

The motion blur does a very good job of making the fps smooth if it's under 60

A) The physics are crap.
B) You don't need a wheel as it's stupidly easy on a keyboard.
C) The drifting is like NFS but slightly more difficult. It's still rubbish. All they have done is turned off the grip and made it really easy to power it through corners.
D) I agree with Fusion and Hellisforheroes. Codemasters did make good fairly realistic games but they have changed and are making it for a 6 year old on his xbox.
