im wanting to build a cheap computer for gaming but im stuck on deciding what VIDEO CARD and RAM to get. a little help please?
planning to play:
Call of Duty 4
Battlefield 2
Counter Strike:Source

i already have
Power Supply: Antec TruePower Trio 430W
Cooler Master Case
HDD

heres where the $300 "budget" comes in
i just bought
CPU: Intel Duel Core E2200
MB: ECS 945GCT-M/1333
http://www.hi-upload.com/upload/uploaded9/21405323.gif

need help picking out RAM and VID CARD
RAM: Crucial Ballistix Tracer 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) $31
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820148076

will this work with my MB at a slower speed?

Graphic Card: XFX GeForce 8800GT XXX 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 $100
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150279

i dont know if i should cough up the $50 or so to get the 512MB version or get a different card
good thing about that card i posted is it comes with COD4, which i plan on getting anyways
currently have a 15in LCD monitor, planning to get a 19in or 20in but its not gonna be for a while before i get it. if that matters

DVD Burner: LITE-ON $23
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106228

so if i get what i posted its gonna cost
CPU+MB $80
RAM $31
Vid Card $100
DVD Burner $23

Looks OK, the mother board is a little weak but looks like you bought it already. I would spend the extra on the 512mb version of the 8800gt. Also the g.skill ddr2 800 kit is better than the tracers as far as reliability but they dont have lights, they are about same price.

if you are not going for a screen bigger than 19" (1440 x 900) then the 256mb version will be enough, otherwise get the 512mb or opt for 9600gt 512mb for the same price. games really eats the the video ram when using high res + aa

otherwise it's good, you'd rather spend the $50 on a cpu cooler and overclock that cpu to 3ghz+

i just got the cpu/mb combo today at frys, im not gonna put it together till probably wed... so if a better combo comes up ill get that

that graphic card is out of stock now... a reason to get the 512MB version or should i get a different card for $150~?

so is that ram is gonna work with the MB even though the MB takes ddr2 667/533?

i just want to make sure before i order

Are you overclocking or leaving everything at stock?

This is the same memory, just without the LEDs which are purely asthetic: 2x1GB Crucial Ballistix PC2 6400 - $25 after MIR

The 8800GT with 256MB of memory is plenty for those video games. Spending another $50 will make your rig more future proof but I say go with the $120 8800GT 256MB and upgrade only when you need more power. By then there will be something way better

Spend a couple dollars more and get a SATA DVD Burner, IDE is old tech. The cables are enormous and future motherboards might stop supporting them at some point. Picked a model with free shipping for ya.

That motherboard is complete trash and I doubt that combo comes with a CPU cooler. Spend a little more for some quality parts, try this if you're not overclocking:
$78 - E2200
$65 - Gigabyte G31 (+$7.60 shipping)

If you are overclocking, try this:
$72 - E2180
$100 - Gigabyte P35 DS3L (+$7.00 shipping)

You'll have a CPU cooler (a necessity) and a much better board. That ECS doesn't even support DDR2 800 speeds and ECS is not known for quality like Gigabyte is. When they're selling an E2200 with a motherboard for only a couple bucks more than the E2200 costs by itself, you know it has to be a trash board.

EDIT: Yes, the motherboard will downclock the memory to DDR2 667. It's compatible just not optimized by any means.

WHen getting your card make sure it is PCIE x16 not PCIE x16 2.0 because your mobo says it is only PCIE x16.

Also your mobo RAM stander is DDR2 667 and I see you are looking at DDR2 800. That just means that default setting on that mobo are going to be at 667 but you might be able to OC to 800. But you might be able to save some money getting DDR2 667 but I'd stick with DDR2 800 just to be safe in case you OC.

http://www.ecsusa.com/ECSWebSite/Pro...uID=44&LanID=9

Also look at this PDF for RAM that is tested with you mobo for the best results.
http://download.ecsusa.com/dlfileecs/manual%5Cqvl%5CISRT%20945GCT-M%20(1.0A).pdf

ANd you might want to just look at the 8xxx series GFx cards caz I think the 9xxx are all PCIE x16 2.0 here is a list.

My pick is...

If you need any more help just ask and I'll help ya any way I can.

#EDIT#
RAM 4 U from off the PDF file.

Very true. I was going with the $300 theme... Why buy what you can't use. But you are right and if you plan on upgrading the mobo later 2.0 would be the best bet.
