Overclocked Q6600 to 3.1Ghz couple questions..

Thread Starter
I am new to overclocking and I read a tutorial and read some threads and stuff, but I am pretty good with computers and built this rig myself a few days ago. I have a couple of questions.

Specs:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad 6600
Memory: 4.0 Gb (2x2Gb 800Mhz)
Mobo: Gigabyte P35-DS3L
Graphics: 9800 GTX 512Mb

Currently Running at:
3.1Ghz

Since I am a beginner I am pretty sure some of my settings are wrong so my questions are...

1. Where acn I download the new CPU-Z, because everytime I try to get a validated screenshot it says to upgarde to 1.45+ and i have 1.44.2 right now.

2. From looking at this screenshot is there anything you can pinpoint that I did wrong? I set my BIOS to Turbo, and clocked it up till 3.1Ghz it seems to be running right.

3. My system is telling me that it is running at 3.11Ghz, but on CPU-Z it is flunctuating from 2.0Ghz-3.1Ghz on all four cores, is it supposed to be doing this?

4. What tempuratures are too high for this processor, and what should I try to keep it under, because right now the processor seems to be running from 25C-40C and if I benchmark it, it goes up to 50C.

I am new to these boards so sorry for the long post, and I appreciate any help or suggestions I can get. I am using air cooling and currently have 8 120mm fans cooling it.

Highest temps the processor will take for the Q6600 is about 65 C, so you generally want to keep it under 60. A quick google search didn't show any CPU-Z 1.45 downloads, so I'm not sure what's up with that. I'd work on lowering your voltages, you're getting a bit high on the Vcore. Please explain what you mean by having set your BIOS to "turbo". If the overclock is being done by some sort of program, you'll want to disable it and do it yourself. Manual is always the best way to go. As for the fluctuation between speeds, I'm fairly sure that your cpeed is being throttled by C1E and Intel Speedstep. Disable both in your BIOS if you want this to stop, as it also leads to a less-stable overclock. GOOD LUCK!

Okay What do you think is a good voltage to be at? I am using the BIOS to do it no program there was some setting I set to Turbo, I will double check that. I need to figure out how to turn off C1E and Intel Speedstep, gonna see if i can figure this out.

I'm at 3.42 on a G0 quad and I'm using 1.368 voltage for the CPU. I tried to go to 3.8 but I couldn't even get it to boot with 1.45v

Okay I just put it up to 3.2 and it is working just as good as before. Still the CPU-Z is flunctuating does anyone know how to make it so that the CPU speed does not throttle? I tried looking for that C1E and Intel Speedstep, but did not find anything in BIOS. Here are some of the settings in my BIOS:

Robust Graphics Booster: Auto | Fast | Turbo
PCI Express Frequency: Do I have to mess with this?
C.I.A.2: Disabled | Cruise | Sports | Racing | Turbo | Full Thrust (not sure about this one)

There were some more options for OC'ing the memory, but I have not messed with that, messing with the FSB already set the memory higher I think. Do you guys think I should mess with the memory settings?

The BIOS says for security reasons to set the Voltages to Auto, I did that and my voltages look the same as before, should I set my CPU voltage core to 1.368?

As Sylon said, I'd say a much better voltage would be high 1.3's. Generally though, anything that is stable and low is good. Generally the idea is to get the lowest stable voltage, which takes a bit of time and messing around,. 1.45 is definitely high though. The more manual options you set for your overclock ,the better. overclocking "settings" are very generic and don't tailor voltages to your exact CPU, more just a general reference, which is a VERY critical thing to a stable overclock.

NEW INFO, WOW. THe graphics stuff doesn't have anything to do with your overclock, I wouldn't mess with it. The C1E settings are going to be buried in power settings most likely, or CPu features. Just experiment with voltages, I'd try 1.4 solid before going lower to make sure it'll be fine. it's usually not a good idea to make such large leaps.

I did what you said and got it down to 1.35 vcore and the computer seems to be runnning well. I looked all over and cannot find this C1E setting , I'm going to keep looking. If anyone has my Gigabyte mobo and knows how to turn this setting off let me know! TY!

Thank you! Okay here is the link to my validation http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc.php?id=358724 . It says I am running at about 2 Ghz but that is because it is throttling my multiplier from 6x to 9x. How do I make it stay on 9x!?!
