I just noticed newegg has a ECS 8800GTS-512MX GeForce 8800GTS (G92) 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 for $170 after a $50 mail in rebate, how much of a performance increase is this compared to a 8800gt?
Not a whole lot better but the 128sp for the 8800GTS will probably net about 10-15fps extra. Also, the 8800GTS 512mb is usually a tad better overclocker then the 8800GT.

Example of how close the two cards are.

Thanks for all the replies, I think I'll go for a 8800gt and possibly upgrade to sli when I can afford to.

Yea, either upgrade to SLI or use EVGAs step up program (not sure what the terms on it are).
