my preggo wife is crying need some help with new cam - Page 4

Pretty nice on the IMG_0708. I like how you're playing with the shutter speed. Many people with Point and Shoots don't venture out of the Auto box.

IMG_0706 is very sharp as well.

You're getting better! But shooting into the sun is extremely tough, as it's hard to get the right exposure to get both the sun and the ground in front of you correct.

I know they aren't very great though but she hasn't really used "fancy" camera's before and so all the options are kind of throwing us for a loop. But don't worry you can throw us some criticism as long as you have some help there. hell you can tell us they flat out suck and we won't get offended

a lot of duplicates of the same stuff and some sadly quite a shot from a moving car as the place we were at we couldn't stop. that mixed with lack of experience isn't helping anyway

any pointers good sir as I'm sure you know WAY more then either of us do and as I said don't be afraid to throw down the gauntlet there.

EDIT: looks like the program that makes the photo album can resize them. thanks for giving me the heads up to look for that.
Advice- Gimp is a GREAT free photo editor- and you can even download an extension to do batch operations- say, resize an entire folder full of images at once.

http://www.gimp.org/

Batch plugin: Tips: Open all the files you want (in the extention- its easy) then set the output to JPG 100% quality. Then go to the resize tab, and resize to whatever. MAKE SURE you set it to 100% quality- 75% is standard and it looks like crap..

I guess I can try that but I don't know how to use gimp as I'm not much of a photo or photo manipulation guy and she said that she didn't like it. not sure why though but so far her preference is paint shop pro. but I can try to let her know again.

also any ideas on how to prevent the blue haze that shows on the pictures or is that one of those part of life situations?
the other question is how do you get a little more contrast out of the pictures and is there any way to shoot some of those pictures where the foreground isn't that dark but yet not overexpose the sky?

I believe the "blue haze" is because of a certain setting you are using. When you set the White Balance to certain settings, it changes the tone of the picture. Let's see, Daylight on my XTi is somewhere around 5500K (more reddish tint), and say the Fluorescent setting is much higher.

Check into your white balance settings, that's where it should be camera wise anyways.

Exposure blending- with a tripod take 3 shots, one underexposed, one normally eposed, and one overexposed. The overexposed shot should have the foreground properly exposed.. Then combine the 3 shots together using the plugin + gimp that I linked both to you earlier.... Thats basically the only way to do it. (Well you can blend the photos in multiple ways / programs, but the 3 shots thing is universal)

(Unless you shoot in RAW format....)

That would be HDR, no?

IF yes, then get Photomatix Basic. It's free, and only takes 2 images.

ok now I'm happy as a mad man and I don't know why though other then it seems I can add a few more features to the camera.
guess there is some firmware program called CHDK that changes things around but this leads me to some other questions

what is so great about RAW shooting? what is the flash sync for? had some others but can't recall right off hand.

RAW is a great format. You can adjust the exposure level, change colors (moreso than jpeg), and white balances, all after the photo has been taken. Provides more options in Post Processing than jpeg ever could. Google it, you'll learn tons.

RAW files

Flash sync...
