If he isn't overclocking, then a Athlon64 X2 would be better than a E21xx
plus there are alot of cheap AM2 boards

From what I see on tomshardware CPU charts, it seems the athlon x2 4800 performs around the same level (or better than) an e4300 (in games atleast), and its half the price. Am I reading the charts wrong?

Most of the E2xx Overclock like crazy. That Gigybyte board or the DFI board would be perfect for it.

Not all people Overclock their cpus for good. Even I admit I keep mine @ 2.8Ghz (stock) for normal use, for my own satisfaction and benchmarks I crank it up. But I don't need all the speed for everday computing, some people just dont like to push their hardware 24/7

Any idea how an overclocked E2220 might compare to an overclocked athlon x2 4800 (which is slightly cheaper and requires a cheaper motherboard)?

Or better yet how does a E2180 overclocked compare to a 4800 overclocked (around same price)?

Its a bit harder to find a comparison like that, sorry..
But both should perform nice and to the satisfaction to your friend.

I think I'll go for an Intel e2xxx since it leaves room for upgrading later on. Thanks for all the suggestions and input everyone

Newegg is generally the cheapest place to go... I suggest the Bloodiron over the DS35 because of the added RAID support... but thats just me... they're both P35 chipset based, and great overclockers also most E2XXXs can hit 3.0Ghz on air without much trouble... E24XX generally can hit around the 3.4Ghz mark on air, and 3.6Ghz on water, which @ those speeds always beats the AMDs...
