Anyone bypassing FanMate2 on Zalman VF1000?

Thread Starter
Just curious if anyone using the Zalman VF1000 vga cooler uses it without the fanmate2 controller, and plugs the fan directly into a mobo fan head?

The reason I ask is I noticed that the fanmate has a heat sink inside it, which makes me wonder if its just a simple POT or is there some other voltage/amperage boost/reduction going on separate and aside from what the the pot dial would do. I have the fan direct to the mobo since its dead quiet running flat out and I dont really need or want the fanmate2 attached. I want to make sure I am not going to damage my mobo or the vga fan by bypassing the fanmate2. The manual doesnt say anything about not using the fanmate2, only that Zalman isnt responsible for any damage if you dont use the included fan - "the fan and fanmate2 are designed to work with each other", or something to that effect.

The rpms with the fanmate2 included, set on full, are 2400+
The rpms with the fanmate2 removed, fan to mobo head, fluctuate between 2400 and 2600, but seems to mostly sit at the 2400+ mark

Is running direct to mobo ok?

yes that is okay. youll be fine fanmate2 only reduces the voltages that goes to the fan from 5v to 11v. when you plug it into the mobo, you run at 12v therefore you got around 2400 to 2600 rpm

so am I basically overvolting the fan right now? (5-11 vs 12)

should I reconnect the fanmate2, set it full and leave it like that instead? I dont want to fry the fan either.

you wont fry the fan lol... its ment to run at 12v. but fanmate2 is just there to undervolt it to give you control of the rpms. its all about how loud you want the fan to be.

There's no issue connecting directly to a fan header, but I don't know why you would. For me the cooling difference between 100% fan speed and 40% fan speed was maybe 2 to 4°C at full load, but the noise was substantially less. Make use of that dear FanMate2. Once you go quiet, you'll never go back.

well, for me it tends to idle 4-6c cooler on full fan rpm, and the same at load (4-6c less) so I am keeping it at full tilt anyway. If I am not hurting anything by bypassing the fanmate then its better to just remove it altogether since I wont be adjusting it up and down, and since its dead quiet in this case regardless of rpm. I just wanted to make sure there wasnt some technical reason to have it there.

thanks for the help

I've got my VF900 connected straight to my motherboard - the FanMate 2 is just a normal fan controller; try it on another fan and you'll see

It's bloody noisy though
