How to choose a Motherboard?

Thread Starter
Hi,

I am building a new system and am searching for the right motherboard to suit my needs. Is there a website/database where I can search certain requirements for a motherboard and a selection of motherboards would come up that match? eg. 5 PCI slots etc

For example, I'm looking for at least 4 PCI slots. 2 next to each other. 64 bit if poss. 4 sata.

I haven't yet decided whether to go the route of a quad Q6600 or a pair of opterons (8 core total)

Is there a website that will help me search for a motherboard?

Thanks alot,

Dave

Ah of course, thanks.

Just a little bit more info maybe then.

My requirements are basically for running an audio editing system running protools. Im running it natively so would require high spec. However, at some point I'm hoping to upgrade to their DSP cards which are quite problematic in some motherboards (fitting them). Hence the requirement for PCI slots that are next to each other. Thanks for any help!

I won't be gaming. I don't think I'll be overclocking much if any. I don't know much about it. I think DDR2. DDR3 have got too high latencies I believe.

I'm not sure whether to go for one quad. Or two quads. AMD or Intel.

Thanks for your help, i'm now confident of getting a system that's right for me rather than me shooting in the dark!

I have also been following this thread if it helps. These all build systems specifically for Pro Tools.

I know nothing about Tyan boards however the one you have selected only has 3 PCI slots, unless one less is not an issue for you. As to AMD vs Intel, you'll get your two camp's opinions on that.
