I see you run 64bit OS you be better of with 4GB RAM (2x2GB).
You right, some ASUS board have issues with some 4Gb RAM because SPD is set to example 46 and it´s fine as long as you go with 800 but if you go with 1066 you may need 50 and above and most of the times you have tRFC setting in BIOS to "auto" and then you get only 46 and no boot, okey we try to change it to 50, but manual on most ASUS boards only goes to 42, now we have a problem, we can go 800 with tRFC on auto and we can boot, but we want to go 1066, well you have to reflash SPD on your memory to 50 and go for tRFC on auto in BIOS and try to boot and if no boot you have to try to reflash to 52 and try again until you can boot or you can change your board to anything other then ASUS.
Conclusion, check tRFC value in SPD on which memory you intend to buy before you buy.
On my Rampage I can manual set tRFC up to 135 but it´s not fine control it´s give numbers, if you go with Gigabyte I think they have fine control so you can choose a give number, example 47, 48, 49, 50
You can red about ASUS tRFC issue with OCZ here, I don´t know if there is any issues with other RAM makers.
