Vista SP1 nightmare

Well got home from nightshift at 7am today & since for a change I was wide awake I decided I may as well install SP1 onto Vista x64. Figuring that surely by now it was ready....

At the same time I set my laptop downloading SP3 for XP. Everything was going well, I was enjoying a 7.22am bottle of Tiger beer & Vista SP1 was 17% into part 2 of it's update when it BSOD'd So I calmly, watched from the couch as it restarted, assuming it would all be ok . 4 failed boots later I was forced from the couch to the keyboard. Decided to roll back to last working; didn't work, safe mode was dead, command prompt too! ***!?

So, fished out my disk and launched into the Vista repair setup. That claimed success and with fingers crossed I rebooted............ Nothing, no boot menu no nothing. The repair startup option had removed any chance I had of even booting into XP Sooooooooooooooooo, out came the XP x64 install disc, thinking I could try repair that so I could get online and find a "I Fu€ked up Vista SP1 install" repair (Laptop is partway through SP3 install by now). Anyway, XP x64 install first sees no drives, then after restarting it and remembering "F6" claims there are no versions of windows anywhere on my PC (4th bottle of Tiger now, and approaching 9 am).

At this point the Tiger (beer) wanted me to kill the PC, but luckily the Laptop finished installing SP3 so onto the internet I went. And bless it's soul it promptly spat out the solution: Just do an upgrade install from the Vista disc (Strange how the obvious eluded me) BUT, my upgrade option was greyed out........ A feature of the OEM version apparently Knew there was a downside to saving a few €€€.

Anyways, by 9.45 I have no Tiger left so muttered some obscenities and went to bed. When I finally woke again 6 hours later I ended up doing a clean install on another drive..... Not sure if I'll install SP1 though. Installing Steam now so I can at least kill someone before going to work tonight!

Moral of the story..........

Make a backup before going SP1 Over a terabyte of storage and I had no backup...... what a ****

well, that sucks. did you hear the news about MS holding off SP1 till later because it wasn't quite ready. i agree with MS, better to have it ready later than not ready at all.

Loads of partitions, but when the bootloader went tits-up my XP x64 & XP32 partitions disappeared! Got them back now, and Vista is up and running from a clean install which oddly enough(or should that be: unsurprisingly?) is NOT showing SP1 as being availabnle for download!
