8800GT artifacting

So, here is the problem:

Sometimes when I first join a CoD4 server the game will freeze and go back to normal ten seconds later.

Other times CoD4 will keep freezing after I join a game, but eventually stop.

Other times CoD4 will get artifacts, even once I go back to the desktop. Forcing me to restart the computer altogether.

Other times, other games like the new GRID demo will keep freezing every few seconds then back in my desktop I will get artifacts.

I underclocked my GPU to 600/1500/1900 (Instead of 600/1500/2000.), and changed changed the drivers to both the 174.16 and 174.12 (Currently on 174.12.).

Now, here is the part which confuses me; it happened literally right after I installed my new RAM. I have yet to try memtest.

Oh, and here is my CPU-Z. If it is any help.

Umm, yeah. 600/1500/1800 are Nvidias stock clocks for the 8800GT.

A burning hot 73C. Even with the fan speed at 61% and a 80mm fan under it pushing the air through some open PCI slots.

The thing is though; it normally happens right when I start up a game, meaning the temps shouldn't be more then 60C. For example: I could start up a game and as soon as the GPU has to do some work, it'll freeze then resume normally.

After that, when the temps start going up; it's fine.

Recently when I tried to join a CoD4 server it actually froze and restarted my computer before I was even in the game. I also went back to stock CPU/RAM clocks and it still happened.

Does this happen in other games?

your GPU is really hot, i would get that temp down to a load of no more than 60-65c.

also, if it doesnt happen in other games, i would try lowering some of the graphics options and see if that helps, namely the anistrophic filtering and the anti-aliasing. also try turning down the resolution and textures. this could make it easier on your card and bring down the temps a bit so that the game can be playable.

if this doesnt work, try uninstalling the game, perhaps somthing got messed up in the install process.

best of luck!

also, get riva tuner and bump that fan up to 100% fan speed all the time.

take the side of your case off and put a fan blowing cool air into it. move your desk next to a window or somthing to get some fresh air in there... screw your house temp! the only thing that matters is your comp!

DONT UNDERCLOCK!!! if you did it because of your temp, get some better cooling or a GPU cooler.

Do test another game and see if there are problems. Perhaps you can run ATItools and FurMark to scan for artifacts.

Take out the new ram and see if the problem goes away.
