graphics card update?

Thread Starter
so if I am using Linux is it worth my while to get a DX10 card? I do a lot of scientific programming (bioinformatics) and gpu's are MUCH better at this (than CPU's), hence my comp really can't do much, the new stream processors in the 8-series seem even better. I've been out of the computer part loop for a long time but seems like NVIDIA didn't really do anything new.

so should I get an 8800GTS G92? that card looks attractive to me.

Im not 100% sure, but i dont think linux will take much advantage of this..

Ive been hearing Linux and high-end graphics card dont do that much together allthough i could be completley wrong.

i could be wrong, but dont you need Vista to run DX10?

even if you dont play DX10 graphics, the DX10 cards usually pwn the crap out of anything else on DX9 apps. so even if you never use a "DX 10" card for DX10 graphics, it will still be good for DX9 apps, there will just be one thing that it wont be used for.

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 x64 and I know there are Drivers out there for my 8800GT AKIMBO 1Gb 3-Phase. I can't say 100% that they will have drivers for the GTS but as far as I know nVidia has been doinf better with *nux drivers.

If you're doing scientific calculations that are heavily GPU dependant then of course you should get a new GPU.

However make sure there are drivers for the card you're looking at and also ensure that the card is compatible with the program you are running.
