Gigabyte 3870 w/ GDDR3 coolermod.

Thread Starter
i was planning this quite some while ago, but my card ended up crapping out on me.

so after my 3rd RMA of this particular card ( legit RMA's ) i got one with a better gpu VID than my previous 2 cards. first one was like 1.38, second was 1.32, this one is 1.22. but still hit temps around 78C full load, after popping off the cooler i discovered a very uneven base to the stock zalman cooler, and even accidentaly broke a fan blade.

so i decided to move ahead a little quicker than i had planned with this mod. here is the end result, i would have made an actual log of the progress, but i didnt want to wait for OCN to go back online. and cutting out the log half, i was able to finish this mod in a much smaller time frame than i had previously calculated.

so here is the end result, still at stock speeds, but with a sapphire 3850 bios, ready for a vmod, but i have some reading to do before that happens.

ENJOY!

temps went from 78C load to 55C load using a BARELY audible 60x60x25mm fan. also using the cards fan header to power an exhaust over the expansion brackets. i also used this oppurtunity of not having any room for a soundcard to move the auzen to my mediacenter. now awaiting the release of a decent pcie soundcard. ( in this event, i plan to order a blowerfan to put on the volcano 10+ )

i had to drill holes through the heatsink, also required ripping off about 4 pins on each side.

bolted on with springs on the heatsink side for the right amount of pressure, i want to get some better bolts/nuts, because the nuts holding it on currently are fashioned from that fans old plastic heatsink fan clip on thing. ( cut the plastic with wire cutters )

im about to flash the bios with 1.4v setting, and 900~ mhz
