Last night I ran Prime95 and it failed in 1 hour and 26 minutes even though a few days ago I ran the same settings on Prime95 and it passed 8 hours. Is it possible that small factors (Firewall, Anti-virus, Windows Update) could disrupt Prime95 and cause it to fail?

Yeah it's retail, but I lapped it. So I don't think I can RMA it.

there are a lot of factors, prime for 8 hours on a cold night could mean error in 20 minutes on a hot day. I have had prime failed in over 10 hours. I think you can be more certain of stability if you prime 24 hours on a hot summer day.

you should run memtest for more than 2 tests my Crucial ballistix tracers sticks failed after 4 passes.. I'd say you run it at least 6 hours.

I would do as We3ls suggested and give the NB some more voltage. I've had a PC run Prime95 and orthos for 11 hors, and then still lock up becasue due to lack of vcore and/or NB voltage. Then I ran the same test and had an error. You might just be on the verge of stability.

*note (not to point you out because I lapped my Q6700, but for those who want to lap wolfdales) The 45nm duals are only running max 1.3625v vcore so there isnt really any need to lap them. They reach their vcore limit long before their temp limit. So I woulnt recommend anyone lap their E8400/E8500 just yet since many are going south.

Because you were pushing it prior to the issue and it wouldn't boot... Try resetting the CMOS then re-entering your settings.

True. I ran into a voltage limit before a temp limit. My E8400 would only do 3.85GHz while under 1.3625v. Also, does your PSU have a ripple with the voltage? It could've rippled at the wrong time and caused a failure. One notch higher on the NB or vcore might prevent it from ever dropping too low at the wrong time.

If I increase my NB voltage, can I decrease my vCore? I know, I probably shouldn't have lapped it. But I'm OCD, so it has to be the lowest I can get it. Oh well, I just hope it doesn't continue to degrade. Well, I'm still running Prime95, and I'm on my 11th hour with a temp of 61°C. Is that enough or do you think I should keep going like jihe said?

I don't have any extra jumpers and my mobo didn't come with one for the CMOS, is there any way I can reset it without any jumpers?

So how do I check if my PSU has ripples? I know OCCT reports your voltage if you fail, but I'm running Prime95 and I don't know how to view the voltage. But yeah, if this fails again, I'll add +0.025 on the NB, that should hopefully be enough to keep me stable.

Off-Topic question: What if I wanted to lower my multi and raise my FSB, at around what FSB should I start increasing the FSB voltage? Or does it vary depending on different factors?
