First Build Component List / Suggestions

Thread Starter
Hello everyone,

With a longtime interest in building a custom PC and the sudden catastrophe affecting my laptop, I've decided to spend the first few weeks of summer building a PC. I've never done it before, so I'm kind of fuzzy on everything; but I've spent the last few days trying to figure things out. Everything is compatible to my knowledge, but if it's not please let me know. I've put together a list of potential components:

CASE: Xion II Black ATX Mid-Tower Case (TD) + $59.99
PSU: COOLMAX CW-650T 650W EPS12V (Newegg) + $79.99 (- $30.00 MIR)
MOBO: GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3L LGA 775 (Newegg) + $89.99
CPU: Intel Dual Core E2180 Retail (Newegg) + $69.99
CPU FAN: ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro (Newegg) + $26.99
HARD DRIVE: WD Caviar SE16 WD2500AAKS (Newegg) + $59.99
VIDEO CARD: XFX 8600 GT XXX 256MB DDR3 (TD) + $99.99 (- $30.00 MIR)
RAM: OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB (2x2GB) (Newegg/TD) + $104.99 (- $25.00 MIR)
OPTICAL: Philips SPD2415BD DVD+/-RW (TD) + $24.99
OS: XP SP2 or Vista Ultimate (both 32-bit, provided)

Everything would be bought from either TigerDirect or Newegg. I plan on using a 22" Acer monitor when everything's put together. All this said, I have some questions:

1) I've heard that the 450W PSU that comes included in the Xion case is pretty shady, i.e. no SATA cables or something. Is it worth spending the money on another PSU, or is there a cheaper quick fix?
2) I plan on OCing the E2180 to ~3.0-3.2 GHz. The retail box comes with a fan, but is it good enough to withstand the OCing?
3) I'm not much of a PC gamer. I really just want something that I'm not going to have to put much money into for 2+ years. Am I going overkill on the VC or RAM here?
4) As far as I understand, the motherboard has sound built in. So, no need for a sound card?
5) In addition to this list, I know that I should probably buy thermal paste. There's probably some cables that I'd need too. What am I missing?

The total comes to about $631.90+shipping before the rebates. Being a poor college student that has yet to find a summer job, I can't say that I really want to spend that much money right now. I'm verrrry open to suggestions that will make the bill a little lower, without sacrificing too much.

Sorry for the long winded first post. I need to get to bed. Thanks to any and all suggestions!

That whole 2nd sentence made almost no sense to me. What does that mean for me, what would I need to make everything work?

An instruction book. MaximumPC did a great "How To" guid with their yearly $1,500 build a couple months or so ago. The second sentence was describing the different kind of connectors that go to components like the mobo.

Seeing as you want a computer that last, I'd suggest upgrading the CPU to and E8400 or Q6600. They're both similar in price, and <$200. If your not going to overclock, you wouldn't really need the HSF, and by not getting that, and dropping down to 2GB or ram, you could afford the better CPU.

Buy 4GB of G-skill RAM. It's quite a bit cheaper ($90 for the PC-8000), and still very reliable.

And I would recommend getting a quad core CPU... Duals might be fast now, but in 2+ years, getting a quad will be well worth it.

If your not gonna game you don't need 4gb of ram like everyone is saying, and about any PCI-e gfx card should do. Don't get a better processor than you have either.

Well, I went with 2x1GB G-Skill RAM instead, and chose to not buy the PSU. Got everything in today. Putting everything together was much easier than I expected, and I'm up and running as of right now. I've yet to mess with anything in the BIOS however, just wanted to get to this step first. Thanks for the suggestions everyone!
