6800GT overheating

Currently over here in England we are having one of heat waves (A full 26C yesterday ), which while elsewhere is fairly tame for us is actually pretty high.

Now my GPU has always ran a little hot, hitting 80C at its peak.

However this time I noticed an odd smell coming from the computer and quickly opened up ATI tool and Everest Home. I was overheating like mad myself so I assumed it was heat related...

Everest had it running at 98C, ATI showed it at over 120C.

It should be noted however I think Everest shows it cooler than it actually is, both Rivatuner and ATI tool show it about the same while Everest is a fair bit lower.

Obviousely im pretty worried about it hitting such temps but also the idle temp is now showing as 79C in ATI tool (70C in Everest).

Now surely it shouldnt be hitting these sort of temps so what could be causing it?

Dirt just clean it and your temps should go down if not replace your heatsink...

Ok well I just had a little one on one time with it, took off the front cover and made sure to get all the dust out. Didnt take off the heatsink because I assume if I do I will need to replace the thermal paste. I dont have any spare around here at the moment however so I will have to order some more.

Temps are stupidly better already though.
80C peak on ATI tool, 71C on everest.
Idle at 50/60C

So ill just keep checking the temps and see how it goes, thankfully everything seems to be working fine right now so the little heat spike doesnt seem to have effected it.

Thanks for the help.

My brother and I both had 6800GT cards for our builds in 2004. He had a cheapo case (no thumbscrews to open) and hardly ever bothered to clean inside his rig, whereas my Lian Li is a lot ore friendly for cleaning and general maintenance.
He now uses my 6800GT, as his became clogged up with dust and gunge, and died a painful death. He talkes better care of it now.
Anyway, the lesson to learn from that little story, is to keep a close eye on hot running cards. Good job you noticed it before it was too late!
