My E8400 is "underclocked"

Thread Starter
Hey guys...I just bought an E8400 from an online store. The chip and HSF seemed to be new and unopened, but when I installed it and flipped the switch, my POST came up showing 333x8 = 2.66

This really ticked me off since it is supposed to be 3.0Ghz. I know that I can change the multiplier to 9 and it'll be 3Ghz, but I thought it was supposed to come out of the factory at the rated clock speed.

Thanks again for your help!

Cheers!

Try putting it under load and see if the multiplier jumps up to its proper value. If it does, take a look here.

Yeah, it's just SpeedStep doing its thing. You can turn off SpeedStep (EIST) if you want, and your processor will stay at 3GHz.

yeah, well that's the thing...since overclocking my last processor (E6550) I've had the EIST disabled. I checked my bios during the first startup and it was still disabled.

I checked the multiplier, and I know I can turn it up to 9, but it seems like it should have been at 9 to begin with.

Did you clear the CMOS before you changed the processor?

Yea, sometimes when switching processors around (especially after overclocking), the CMOS can get funky. Just clear the CMOS and go back and disable the Speedstep functions and it should default to 9.

FYI, speedstep always drops the multi to 6x, so if it is any other value, it isnt Speedstep.

Glad to see the CLR CMOS worked.
