Want to run my Q9300 at 3,00Ghz

Thread Starter
Hi,
I am new to overclocking so I hope to learn a lot here.

My system:
Q9300 with Scythe Infinity, Asus P5E(bios 0605), Kingston 2x2GB(6400) 5-5-5-18, Antec P182.
Using Windows XP Home SP2.

My questions:
1. Can I run it at 3 Ghz just by setting the FSB to 400 and leaving the rest of the BIOS at default?
2. I think 3 Ghz is enough for me or can the Q9300 with the P5E take more without running on the edge? (cause I don't want that)

Hope for your advice.

I run my Q6600 (2.4Ghz stock) at 3.6 Ghz, so yes, you can push your Q9300 past 3.0 I'm sure. It might just take some extra tweaking.

As far as just upping your FSB to 400, give it a shot and see. You really won't hurt anything. If it doesnt work your computer just wont boot. If that's the case go back in the BIOS and re-tweak everything. From my experience, short of jacking up voltages, it's pretty hard to break anything.

Got an answer on another forum so I run at 3Ghz!

Question:
CPU-Z says my Core Volatge is 1.376, isn't that too high?

Take care with that Core Voltage.

The 45nm Yorkfields have a lower rating than its predecessors

Specs state: 1.3625

I have no experience with the Yorkfield cores yet, but from what I have read there have been some un-happy peeps that pushed their CPU voltage too high and ended up frying their pride and joy.

3.0 is a reality, just be careful.

Well, I tried again with success so far...

FSB 430 x 7,5 = 3.225Ghz
Core Voltage in bios = 1.2750 (CPU-Z gives 1.248 V)
Memory 1:1, 5-5-5-18

Core Voltage should be save now I guess?
Looks fine to you guys or did I forget something?

Nice.

What other monitoring apps are you using?

CoreTemp also provides a VCore reading in addition to temps.

HWMonitor from CPUID is also an accurate provider of information.

yar.... you'll be goin' faster soon

Core Voltage monitoring:
1.2750 ASUS BIOS 0605
1.248 CPU-Z
1.2250 RealTemp
1.1125 CoreTemp
min 1.24, max 1.25 CPUID Hardware Monitor

Which one is right?

Please note that I am speculating.

The setting in the BIOS, an average(ish) VDroop, and the balance of the rest of the readings points to HW Monitor and RealTemp being the most accurate imho.

P.S. I generally err on the side of caution...
