790i- WHAT THE HECK?!?!?!?! - Page 5

I have the same issue iwth my QX9650.

I have swapped out all parts, CPU, PSU, Case, you name it, same problem.

FF code after turning it off and then back on after a short amount of time.

Unplugging and discharging, then plugging back in makes it work. Runs 100% stable with my current settings...as long as I don't turn it off.

Its really getting annoying...but its definitly the BIOS or the Board.

Its almost like the board is posting once, then when shut down it isn't recognizing that its shut down and isn't re-posting...

Very strange indeed.

I am going to try re-flashing my BIOS tonight with minimal parts installed and on stock settings in hopes that I can get it working properly...otherwise I think were both stuck waiting for P05 or P06, whenever they address this issue, which has got to be a known issue by now...

Ok... man I thought I was crazy for a minute there. When I called EVGA the guy I talked to made it sound like he had never heard of this problem before... So it's probably not JUST my board thank goodness. I really didn't want to have to go through the hassle of an RMA.

Ok yep you got it- mine is 100% stable, just as long as I don't turn off the board I'm alright, but as soon as I turn it off it just freezes upon restarting it. I don't know if you have looked at this or not, but right above your memory slots there are like 3 colored LED's... to the left of the LED's there is a fan plug, and to the left of that is a red LED that says "CPU HOT" above it. When my board freezes that red LED it lit. Try to see of yours is lit too. Also I have noticed if I leave the machine on while it's in it's frozen state and I open and close the disc tray and wildly play with the on/off button and the reset button (yes... I figured this out out of pure frustration) and I continually play with the buttons it WILL restart and post correctly without turning it off... it will just do it in the middle of the frozen state. (although I don't know if it's a good idea to try this lol) Ok well I guess our only hope is to continually turn it off and on till it boots correctly till the next BIOS is out... UGH.

Well XFX has me on "hold" until they can figure something out with their engineers and/or nvidias engineers...

I am going to take my system into my retailer and let them bugger around with it and maybe find a board that works out of the 10+ they have in stock...if they can't I am just going to scrap the XFX and buy the Asus Striker II Extreme...it isn't based on the Reference board and there are 1% of the posts regarding issues with it...

Well good luck; please post on this thread more about what you end up doing. I might just switch out my board too if i keep having problems. I'm not gonna give up yet though... I will continue to pester EVGA till they do something about this.

Actually it's not the boot settings... my boot settings are totally fine- I disabled everything except the raptors. And actually COD4 is what is usually in the disc tray, and that's what I ejected that one time when I was frantically pressing buttons... but I don't boot from the cd tray so it wouldn't make sense. I still think it's a problem with the BIOS...

Installed my non-reference Striker II Extreme today.

Works brilliantly, still needs some tweaking to work good with OCZ RAM...but otherwise a perfect gem. (Still on BIOS 0402...not planning on flashing unless needed)

there is the sata dvd issue to consider as well. I haven't had the issue personally (I use only pioneer and plextor drives). A number of members on the EVGA forum have had issues that stem back to sata DVD drives (usually cheap no name brands for some unknown reason). The asus drive you are using is obviously not made by asus and may be the issue.

Try unplugging your sata dvd drive (the sata cable, not the power cord) and then test the system normally. If you still get lock ups it would be something else. If it works fine...

wait for bios release to resolve it or dig up an IDE DVD drive.

I don't know why, but magically all of a sudden I have been having luck with my 790i. My q6600 is at 3.22 GHZ constant now... no freezing yet
