Need help OCing QX9650 on 790i

Thread Starter
Hello people

Looking for expert advice to streamline the OC on my new rig.

Specs as below:

QX 9650
790i Ultra
4 Gb DDR3 OCZ 1800 Mhz 8-8-8-24, EPV up to 1.95 V
9800 GX2 Quad SLI
Enermax Galaxy 1000 W DXX
Dual 300 Gb WD Velociraptors in RAID 0, dual 250 Gb WD Caviar in RAID 1 backup

Running on custom watercooling setup of D-Tek Fuzion V2, Black Ice Extreme II with 38x120 mm Panaflo 90 cfm fans, 1/2" ID Tygon, Dario D5 pump and Swiftech Micro Res, together with a ViperJohn SPP block. Mosfets, RAM and MCP air cooled.

What voltages should I set on vcore, RAM, FSB, SPP, MCP, SPP-MCP? And vref changes to do? Memory timings, P1 and P2? Any other settings to disable/enable?

Aiming to get a CPU frequency around 4.1 to 4.2 Ghz for 24/7 running, while avoiding the 790i 400 FSB, 1600 QDR hole and the data corruption issues with memory timings....

just leave everything on auto except vcore and memory voltage, Those need to be changed, otherwise the rest will adjust automatically.

You can easily get 4 ghz on air 24/7, water cooling will not give you much more over that.

My two cents, but dual GX2's are a huge waste of money.

just up the fsb by 50mhz , then run OCCT for 2 hours , if it gets past 2 hours , up the CPU voltage , and try again , keep the memory unlinked......

ragarding dual 9800GX2's , atm quad sli doesent work , but hopefully in the future with better drivers , youl see a big difference , same goes for tri-sli!

not sure what the max volts on a Q9650 is , but id gues max 1.4v???......anyone?

dont go above 70c in temps.....

Drop the multiplier on your processor to 7, set your QDR to 1800, and make sure the ram is running at the specified voltage and at a 1:1 ratio with the FSB. This should get you right past the FSB hole quickly and easily, all in one step. Then overclock your processor by increasing the multiplier back up to 9 step by step (0.5x increments) and increasing the voltage when necessary. Now you should be stable at your RAM's stock speed and at 4.0 GHz.

Almost forgot to mention, the data corruption only usually occurs after a BSOD, or with unlinked ram. So don't put anything important on the computer until its been stable for a week, and dont unlink the ram. Also, make sure that the P1 and P2 settings are enabled and that it is set to T2 timing.

max safe voltage on the chip is 1.4v. Anything beyond that is not recommended.

I was able to run 10x400 with 1.4v stable but that may just be because I got lucky on the chip stepping. (Although my temp sensors on the chip are useless)

Thanks for the input guys, I'll see how I do. I'm OCing on water since that will keep the load temps much lower than on an air cooler.

Yes, the Quad SLI driver is still broken, and I doubt it will ever be fixed. Then again, I can always sell them both and get two 9900 GTX or GT 200 when they make an appearance.

My idea up till now is FSB 450 x 9.5 at around 1.4 - 1.5 V. RAM will turn sync and link 1800 8-8-8-24 2T at 1.95 V, P1 and P2 enabled, and will not touch the GTLref.

So you are just going to limit yourself to running the ram at its spec? Those things can probably be pushed to 2000MHz and still be stable.

I'm not betting anything with the RAM history the 790i is getting up till now.
